Civilization 7 puts you in charge of your own state, with expansion as your primary goal. You expand your empire and also defend yourself using Units. Units are groups or factions of NPCs under your command and do as they are bid. The Army Units in the game traverse the ground and fight your wars for you, often under the leadership of Army Commanders.
The Army Commanders are a new addition to the game and lead charge of Army Units. As they would in real life, these NPCs command the units and deploy them in combat, all while providing buffs and using special abilities. These are some of the strongest NPCs in the game and can help you turn the tide of any battle.
Let us figure out how the Army Commanders work in Civilization 7 and want to optimally use them in battle. Our guide has you covered. In this guide, we shall go over how Army Commanders work in Civilization 7 and how to use them.
How Army Commanders Work

As we stated earlier, Army Commanders take charge of your Army Units and lead them into battle. The Army Commander does so by absorbing the Army Unit. This means that if you move the Army Commander, you move the whole Army Unit at once. Now, while this may seem useless, it makes transporting multiple Units across the battlefield easier. The Commander can absorb up to six Units at once (four at base, six when fully upgraded). This allows you to cover large ground easily. Once you’ve reached your desired destination, you can deploy the units, and they will spread out once again.
The Army Commanders also come in with a variety of skills, which you unlock as they gain XP throughout your journey. These abilities range from combat buffs to increased command radius and more.
Another ability the Army Commanders possess is the Reinforce ability. This is the right-most button in the Army Commanders options menu. Clicking this button will drag your whole army back to you and is an effective way to retreat and recover if needed.
