Our guide explains the Break Bar in Clair Obscur Expedition 33. Also, find out how you can get through enemy shields for maximum damage.

The turn-based combat in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 can be challenging, as you’re balancing how much damage you deal with minimizing the amount you receive. To make matters more complicated, you’ll encounter enemies with a Shield Bar that you need to break before draining their HP. For tougher enemies, you’ll also need to understand how the Break Bar functions and why it’s important to ‘Break’ these opponents for maximum damage.
In this guide, we’ll explore the intricacies of the Break Bar in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and how you can get through enemy shields.
How To Break Enemy Shields in Clair Obscur Expedition 33

Some enemies will have shields over their Health Bar. You can identify this when you see a grayed-out HP bar and shield icons on top of it. The number of shield icons indicates how many hits it will take to break through the shield. For example, if there are 3 shield icons, your first three attacks will be blocked by the opponent’s shield. Each attack on a shielded foe will cause one of the shield icons to break apart. Once all icons disappear, the shield is broken, and you will begin dealing normal damage to their health.
Also, keep in mind that an enemy with an active status ailment will lose parts of their shield at the start of each turn. For instance, in the Burning state, they will lose 1 shield at the beginning of their turn, even before you attack. Such ailments can help you remove enemy shields more quickly.

How To Fill the Break Bar in Clair Obscur Expedition 33

Every enemy in the game has a Break Bar. It’s the yellow bar just below their Health Bar. It gradually fills up as the battle progresses, and you keep attacking. When the Break Bar is full, you need to launch an attack using a Break Skill. There are several Break Skills in the game, one of the earliest being Gustave’s Overcharge ability. If you use a Break Skill on a foe whose Break Bar is full, that enemy will ‘Break.’ The broken state is essentially a stun—stunned enemies take significantly more damage and skip one turn.
This gives you a chance to heal your party members without worrying about retaliation. Or, you can continue attacking the stunned enemy for two turns, as they won’t be able to defend themselves. Although every enemy has a Break Bar, you’ll usually fill it only during boss fights, as these battles last longer than standard enemy encounters.
