In Clair Obscur Expedition 33, Gustave unfortunately does pass away early on in the game. If you haven’t reached that far in the game, this might come off as a shock. Gustave in Clair Obscur Expedition 33: How Does He Pass Away?
The game does a brilliant job of showing Gustave as the protagonist in the earliest moments. You take control of him in Lumiere before the Gommage, as he bids farewell to his love, Sophie. Then, you see him get ready for Expedition 33, as the group is set to leave for the ultimate objective of killing The Paintress and ending further Gommages.
Even when the Expedition lands on the Continent and almost the entire group gets massacred by a mysterious figure (later revealed to be Renoir), Gustave is among the few that survive. He eventually manages to track down Maelle and Lune, and all seems to be going well for the group as they try and make their way toward slaying The Paintress.
However, tragedy strikes at the end of Act 1, when the mysterious old man at the beach (Renoir) ambushes the group. During the faceoff, Gustave sacrifices himself to protect the others. Gustave’s death severely affects the rest of the expedition members, especially Maelle.

Is There Any Way To Prevent Gustave’s Death in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?
Regardless of how you play or what you do, Gustave in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is destined to die. You cannot prevent his death in the game. Also, there isn’t any magical way to revive him while progressing through the story. Gustave’s death can be extremely shocking to players since the game does such a great job at establishing him as the protagonist. That’s why his death seems to come out of the blue and can leave players heartbroken.
