Clair Obscur Expedition 33 isn’t your typical turn-based fighting game. It greatly changes the formula by introducing the ability to counter enemies as they strike. Beyond the normal attacks and counters, the game also has a mechanic known as gradient attack and gradient counters.

If you want to master combat in the game, you’ll need to understand how these systems work. In this guide, we’ll explain how you can use gradient attacks and counters in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and what they are.

After progressing quite a bit in the game, you’ll unlock the ability to unleash gradient attacks. Think of these as special and more powerful attacks you can perform using the dash button. Even more exciting—these attacks don’t count as an action, effectively allowing you to attack twice in one turn.

Upon the introduction of gradient attacks, you’ll also see the gradient bar appear next to each character’s portraits. The bar will fill up every time a character uses one of their skills. You can fill the bar with up to three charges before it gets full.

There are different types of gradient attacks that you can unlock for characters as your relationship with them deepens. Some attacks deplete one charge from the bar, while others may require two or even three complete charges. The gradient attack types you unlock do not require to be assigned into special slots. Characters will use all of the available attack types automatically.

You’re party aren’t the only ones who can unleash gradient attacks. Some enemies will also be able to strike at you with these powerful attacks. You can recognize when a gradient attack is coming by the combat slowing down and the gray swirling effect that occurs just beforehand.

You’ll have to press the dash button just as these attacks are about to land to complete a powerful counter move, known as gradient counter. In some events, you’ll need to alternate between parrying, dodging and gradient counters to nullify threats from an enemy.

That’s all you need to know about the gradient attacks and counters in Clair Obscur Expedition 33.
