Everything you need to know about the weapon scaling in Clair Obscur Expedition 33, including the attribute system and how it impacts DPS.

On the surface, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is a pretty straightforward turn-based RPG, reminiscent of games like Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and of course, Final Fantasy. However, as you start progressing through the game, you will eventually realize that it’s much more than a turn-based JRPG. Instead, the game is very akin to a modern action RPG when it comes to its moment-to-moment gameplay and combat. Furthermore, the game also features a host of additional systems that can be intimidating for turn-based fans. Similar to souls-likes, Expedition 33 features a weapon scaling system, which determines your chosen weapon’s base damage.
However, the game doesn’t do a good job of explaining these rather important aspects of combat and build crafting. Thankfully, the weapon scaling and attributes aren’t too difficult to understand. Here’s everything you need to know about Clair Obscur Expedition 33’s weapon scaling and attributes.
How Does Weapon Scaling Work in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?

In Clair Obscur Expedition 33, weapons scale primarily with Might. Think of it like how most weapons in Elden Ring or Dark Souls scale with Strength or Dexterity. However, on top of the Might scaling, every weapon you find in the game will have two more stats that define its damage scaling. For example, let’s look at Lune’s Colim weapon. Colim scales with Might, getting a good chunk of base damage increase with each level up. However, on top of Might, the weapon also has Vitality and Agility scaling. Moreover, the scaling is not universal across all the associated stats. By default, Might will always give you the higher base DPS compared to other stats.
Nevertheless, for every weapon, there’s a cap on how much you can boost its raw damage by leveling up Might. After a certain threshold (for Colim, the threshold is 60), increasing Might will not result in increased base damage. Instead, you need to level up a different attribute to increase the weapon’s damage. Additionally, the attribute scaling also has different tiers, which denote how much increase you can expect from leveling up certain attributes. Taking Colim’s example once again, the weapon has a B scaling in Vitality and a C scaling in Agility.
This essentially means that damage for Colim scales better with Vitality than Agility. However, investing in both will give you a substantial increase in the base damage of the weapon.
Can You Increase Elemental Damage of Weapons?

While there are ways to make elemental builds in Clair Obscur Expedition 33, you cannot increase a weapon’s elemental damage via attribute scaling. Leveling up your attributes only works on the base damage that the weapons output. However, you can always use skills that offer much better elemental affinity to work elemental damage into your builds. As for the most overpowered elemental affinity in the game, it’s Burn (Fire). Thankfully, you aren’t locked out of Burn if you decide to use a weapon with a different element. Using a combination of Pictos and skills, you can still dish out Burn damage to enemies, which can easily sap through their health bars.
