Before you start the story, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 will present you with a menu featuring three difficulty options. You can select one of the following: Story, Expeditioner, and Expert. The game uses a turn-based combat system with a few real-time elements, such as dodging, countering, and parrying attacks. Your reaction time will be put to the test on harder difficulties.

Here is a detailed breakdown of each difficulty setting:

  • Story: The easiest option, where enemies deal less damage. If you are unsure about your dodge and parry timings, this mode offers a much longer window to adjust mid-fight.
  • Expeditioner: This is the default setting and the way the developers intended you to play the game. It offers the right balance between an easy and challenging experience.
  • Expert: This is the third and hardest difficulty option in the game. Enemies are far more aggressive, and your dodge and parry windows are nearly nonexistent. This setting is ideal for seasoned players of the turn-based RPG genre.

The Story mode is perfect for an immersive experience focused on storytelling and lore. This option won’t present any major obstacles to progression, and it allows you to sharpen your reaction time for later encounters. If you are a trophy or achievement hunter, this setting will help cut down the time required by making enemies weaker and more susceptible to your attacks.

The Expeditioner difficulty offers the best of both worlds, providing a balanced challenge. On the other hand, the Expert difficulty truly puts your reaction time to the test. There is no wrong way to experience Clair Obscur Expedition 33; however, we recommend starting on the easiest difficulty first before attempting a second run on the higher settings.
