Does Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Have Fillers?

Unlike the original Bleach anime, the new Thousand-Year Blood War arc adaptation of the story does not have any fillers. It’s headed straight into the entire story of the manga. All 26 episodes in the first and second cour of the adaptation are canon, dedicated purely to the main storyline.

Though some new characters and storylines were added in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, they can be seen as canon because Tite Kubo included them. Considering the length of this arc, it’s unlikely that future episodes will have fillers either.

Are Bleach Films Considered Fillers?

Many fans of Bleach feel that the Bleach movies are fillers. These films do not actually connect to the manga storyline. They are full of action and entertaining in their own self-contained universes. However, some have loose connections to the main body of the story, like Bleach: Hell Verse, but those don’t have an impact on the plot.

Therefore, if you are looking for canon material, you can avoid the movies. They’re not all that terrible if you are in the mood for some extra Bleach fun. Just don’t expect any earth-shattering revelations.

Can You Skip Bleach Anime Filler Episodes?

You can skip Bleach anime filler episodes without missing major plot points. Some of the fillers, despite being entertaining side stories, do not contribute to the main narratives and character developments. For instance, the Bount and Zanpakuto Rebellion arcs are just fun adventures.

These aren’t really necessary for understanding the overall story. If you want to cut those moments out and just really focus on the core plot and the arcs for the characters, then you should skip them. If you’re a die-hard fan, you might enjoy the bonus material as it provides more character development.

What You Would Miss by Skipping Bleach Anime Filler Episodes

If you skip Bleach filler episodes, you’ll miss more than just non-canon material. Some fillers add character development that doesn’t occur in the main story. For example, the Zanpakuto Rebellion arc explores the bond that Soul Reapers and spirits share with their Zanpakuto, and it gives you an interesting new perspective on exactly how those bonds work. Such moments make you understand certain characters more, even if they do not influence the plot directly.

Fillers also provide relief from the dramatic main arcs. For example, the Bount arc is a new storyline that is completely different and refreshing, coming after the intensity that really had audiences on tenterhooks in the Soul Society arc. These breaks allow a light or a different storyline that the anime did not go through according to the manga to catch up while sitting back, breathing, and relaxing.

In addition, skipping fillers means missing great world-building scenes. While the Hell Verse movie is filler, but it reveals entirely a fresh domain in the Bleach universe, bringing with it special animations and all-new characters that aren’t even involved in the main plot.
