Learn about the Something New God Roll for PVE and PVP content, the best perks, and how to get it in Destiny 2!
This guide has been updated for Episodes Echoes and the Final Shape Expansion.
Something New is a stasis aggressive frame hand cannon reintroduced in the 2024 Solstice of Heroes event. Hand cannons are a fan favorite option in most content, especially in PvP content. Aggressive frame hand cannons are slower firing, harder hitting options that are potent in PvP. The Something New can be enhanced, granting it better stats and access to enhanced perks in Columns 3 and 4. The Something New is an event weapon, so it is only available for a limited time during the Solstice of Heroes event. In this guide, we will discuss the PvE and PvP god rolls and how to get the Something New hand cannon.

PvE Something New God Roll
The best perks for the Something New PvE God Roll are Smallbore, Appended Mag, Subsistence, and Frenzy. These provide important stats, utility, and damage for the weapon.
The following list is the best perks for the Something New PVE God Roll in Destiny 2:
- Launcher Barrel: Smallbore
- Magazine: Appended Mag
- Column 3 Trait: Subsistence
- Column 4 Trait: Frenzy
- Masterwork: Range
- Origin Trait: Dreamwork
- Weapon Mod: Backup mag
PvE God Roll Breakdown
Something New is currently the only stasis aggressive frame hand cannon in the game, but that’s about the only unique thing it has going for it. We really just want to bump its stats up in significant ways that aren’t affected by our main perks in Columns 3 and 4. Smallbore increases both range and stability, two stats that aren’t going to get the benefit from our more active traits. Aggressive frame hand cannons are infamous for their smaller magazine size, so Appended Mag and a Backup Mag mod are all but completely necessary. Handling and reload speed are both going to be increased by Frenzy, so a Range masterwork is going to get us the most benefit overall.
We just mentioned the trait for Column 4: Frenzy. After being in combat for 12 seconds, it grants a 15 percent damage buff and makes our Handling and Reload Speed 100. This is a huge boon to a weapon like Something New that feels sluggish otherwise. Since reloading is gonna be the hand cannon’s biggest hindrance, Subsistence is a godsend perk to keep the magazine topped off. Dreamwork is also a great origin trait to mitigate the reloading issues as well, but switch it out for Nadir focus if you are running solo.
Other PvE Rolls of Note
- Demolitionist / Headstone
- A great perk combination for stasis and prismatic builds
How to Use the Something New in PvE
Hand cannons overall are great but not the best options for PvE for most content. Exceptions abound but hand cannons typically just don’t kill adds fast enough to be effective. So unless a hand cannon is in that elite exceptional group, just note that your hand cannon will be decent and effective, but there is probably something better you could be using. All of that being said, hand cannons just feel good and fun to use, so don’t feel like you are handicapping yourself for using one.
Aggressive frame hand cannons like the Something New suffer in PvE content more than most hand cannons. They fire more slowly than all other hand cannon frames and don’t tend to kill rank-and-file enemies any faster. This coupled with their smaller mag size and slower reload speed, make them a subpar choice in PvE. Perhaps one day something will change, but for now, they just aren’t worth bringing into PvE.
PvP Something New God Roll
The best perks for the Something New PvP God Roll are Hammer-forged Rifling, Accurized Rounds, Rapid Hit, and Precision Instrument. These provide important stats, utility, and damage for the weapon.
The following list is the best perks for the Something New PVP God Roll in Destiny 2:
- Launcher Barrel: Hammer-forged Rifling
- Magazine: Accurized Rounds
- Column 3 Trait: Rapid Hit
- Column 4 Trait: Precision Instrument
- Masterwork: Range
- Origin Trait: Precision Instrument
- Weapon Mod: Targeting Adjuster
PvP God Roll Breakdown
If you are a fan of aggressive frame hand cannons, Something New can be a great option for your kinetic slot. As with almost all hand cannons, increasing our range is a top priority. Hammer-forged Rifling and Accurized Rounds are great for this while also not hurting Something New’s other stats. A Range masterwork and a Targeting Adjuster mod further help this weapon’s overall accuracy.
Our perks in Columns 3 and 4 are all about making the weapon more forgiving and perform better as a firefight goes on. Rapid Hit increases stability and reload speed for every precision hit, something hand cannons are better at than a lot of other weapon types. Precision Instrument also increases damage for every hit on target. This won’t affect the overall Time-To-Kill of the weapon in most cases, but it will make it much more forgiving. Nadir Focus adds to the passive benefits even further by increasing its range passively as you get more hits. The Something New is looking like a great option to have for the kinetic slot, especially if you are a fan of aggressive frame hand cannons.
Other PvP Rolls of Note
- Elemental Capacitor / Kill Clip or Precision Instrument
- A great combination but only if you are running an Arc or Void super.
How to Use the Something New in PvP
Hand cannons are a favorite in PvP and for good reason. They are a reliable and hard-hitting option that also just tends to feel good. Hand cannons are favored by top-tier players. They are great at all but the longest ranges and can dominate at mid-range. Just make sure you are hitting your precision hits and you won’t have any issues with a good hand cannon.
Aggressive hand cannons like Something New are weapons that you are either going to love or hate. Some players love aggressive hand cannons and others love them. As stated earlier, they fire more slowly than other hand cannon frames but they hit harder and have a much more forgiving range. Unlike other hand cannons, they aren’t great for one-on-one duels but are awesome for team-shot plays. Give Something New a try and see if you enjoy it, but don’t fret if you don’t care for the feel, try using an adaptive or precision frame instead.
