NetEase Games’ collaboration with Marvel brought up the AAA third-person shooter ‘Marvel Rivals’. The highly anticipated free-to-play team-based shooter was released on December 6, 2024, for various platforms, such as PC (via Steam/Epic Games), PS5, and Xbox X/S. The game’s availability on multiple platforms naturally raises the question about the cross-play functionality among fans.

To put it in short, Marvel Rivals supports crossplay, although in a limited way. You will be able to play with friends irrespective of the device, just not in all the game modes. In this article, we will explain the crossplay and cross progression features of Marvel Rivals, and how you can play with your friends across all consoles.

Marvel Rivals Crossplay, Explained

Marvel Rivals allows true crossplay only in the non-competitive modes. You will be able to team up with your friends across all platforms (PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S) on any of the casual modes, including Quick Match, Conquest, Custom Games, and even in the practice range. If you want to complete the special missions to farm for currency, you will be able to do it with your friends in crossplay.

However, Marvel Rivals does not support crossplay when it comes to the competitive modes. PC players can only queue with other PC players. On the other hand, Xbox and PS5 players share the same competitive matchmaking queue in Marvel Rivals. This is done to preserve the integrity and fair play factor of the game since keyboard and mouse generally offer better aim and controls when compared to controllers.

On the other hand, Marvel Rivals is not available on the Mobile Phone platform, which takes them out of the equation altogether.

Does Marvel Rivals Have Cross-Progression?

Another important feature that accompanies cross-play is cross-progression, which allows players to transfer the saved data from one platform to another, preserving their in-game progression. Unfortunately, Marvel Rivals doesn’t feature cross-progression.

In an exclusive with The Gamer at the Tokyo Game Show 2024, Marvel Rivals’s Creative Director Guangyun Chen revealed that:

“For now, we have no cross-progression. As we only have around two months to go global launch, we are doing the final tech check to see what we can do and how we can process it. The workload is a lot more than we thought at the beginning”

He also added that they are still having an internal discussion about this highly requested feature, and it is uncertain when the decision will be made.

In conclusion, the NetEase Games’ ambitious project Marvel Rivals supports full crossplay with some limitations but doesn’t include a cross-progression feature.
