The Demon Slayer series’ protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, is one of the most loveable characters. His empathetic nature, ability to fight for his loved ones, and persistence in tough situations make him stand out. However, those who have read the manga will know he became the biggest threat to the entire human race.

This led to an interesting question by anime-only fans — does Tanjiro become a demon in Demon Slayer? Yes, Tanjiro Kamado becomes a demon in the Demon Slayer manga. He became a demon who not only managed to accept the entirety of Kibutsuji Muzan’s blood but also conquered the sun.

Tanjiro Kamado was arguably one of the strongest demons in the entire series. However, there weren’t any feats that allowed us to compare him to Muzan. Therefore, the true extent of his powers will always be unknown.

How Did Tanjiro Become a Demon?

Naturally, those who haven’t read the manga will want to know how the protagonist became a demon. The entire Demon Slayer Corps was taking Muzan. All the demon hunters in the scene were giving their all against Muzan, keeping him occupied until the sun came up. Muzan was against the ropes, and being the coward he was, he transferred all of his blood to Tanjiro. Muzan was a pest who would do anything to survive and often take the coward’s way out.

He wanted Tanjiro to carry his will and, therefore, injected the demon hunter with his blood. Moments later, Tanjiro became a demon who conquered the sun. The person who once put his life on the line multiple times became the very thing he swore to kill. The reason for Muzan’s choice could be due to the Kamado family’s connection to the sun. Nezuko had already conquered the sun. The choice was obvious in making Tanjiro the demon who would carry his will.

How Strong Was Demon Tanjiro?

One can confidently say that Tanjiro, in the demon form, was probably as strong as Muzan, if not stronger. Muzan had centuries to explore and finetune his Blood Demon Art. However, Tanjiro took in all of Muzan’s blood and conquered the sun. Furthermore, he was a demon with access to the Breath of the Sun.

His true potential will be unknown to us since he was a demon for a very short period. He was unable to show his true powers. That said, one can imagine how powerful he would have been if he had been a demon. He conquered the sun, had access to Blood Demon Art, and used the Breath of the Sun. If not for Kanao’s swift actions, Tanjiro would have become the strongest demon to have ever walked the earth.

How Was Tanjiro Saved in Demon Slayer?

As stated, Tanjiro Kamado was saved by Kanao Tsuyuri. She was instrumental because of her ability to administer the medicine that Shinobu Kocho entrusted her. Additionally, she sacrificed her eyesight by utilizing the final form of the Flower Breathing. Since Kanao had already used the final form, it took a toll on her eyesight on one eye. She risked going blind for the rest of her life to save Tanjiro.

Tanjiro, in his demon form, attacked Nezuko. Everyone around him thought he would undo all of Tamayo’s efforts to revert her to the human form. However, she had developed immunity to demon bites and stayed in her human form. Shortly, Kanao used Equinoctial Vermillion Eyes, which improved her vision and speed. She found an opening and injected Tanjiro with the medicine. Moments later, Tanjiro Kamado woke up to an emotional Nezuko and Kanao, who were happy to see him in human form. The protagonist had the entire Demon Slayer Corps worried. Just when people celebrated Muzan’s death, they were faced with a demon who conquered the sun.

In Conclusion

Tanjiro Kamado’s demonic transformation was a massive plot twist no one saw coming. Aside from serving the purpose of a plot tool, it was interesting to see the protagonist become the biggest threat briefly. This pattern is explored in popular media and isn’t particularly new. But, it was timed to perfection and had a lasting impact on the readers. While it’s a shame that we couldn’t see Tanjiro’s true potential in his demonic form, fans and characters alike are happy that he reverted to his human form. Conquering the very thing that killed them would have proved to be far too difficult to deal with.
