Tempest Rising is an RTS by Slipgate Ironworks that offers a single-player campaign and limited co-op features, which may be expanded.
Tempest Rising adopts the style of the classic RTS franchise, Command & Conquer, and breathes new life into it with updated visuals, its spin on faction designs, and unique abilities. Some of the most enjoyable parts of RTSs like the cult classic Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 and the evergreen StarCraft 2 are their dedicated cooperative modes that allow two players to progress through increasingly difficult missions while working together.
Even beyond RTS games, co-op games and their features have garnered widespread appreciation. The immense success of Helldivers 2, Space Marine 2, and Split Fiction is a testament to the same. These games illustrate how cooperative gameplay can hold up a title on its own, or act as a force multiplier of fun. So, let’s discuss the co-op features offered by Tempest Rising and what to expect in future updates.
Does Tempest Rising Have a Co-Op Campaign?
Unfortunately, Tempest Rising doesn’t pack cooperative or multiplayer features in its campaign at launch. The game features two single-player campaigns. The campaigns let you take command of two playable factions, the Tempest Dynasty and the GDF (Global Defense Force). They take place in an alternate timeline where the Cuban Missile Crisis ended in a nuclear catastrophe. There is a third teased faction, the mysterious Veti, which will be released following the game’s launch.
Co-Op Features in Tempest Rising
At launch, the only way to play co-op in Tempest Rising is through an online lobby. Create a match and team up with another player to fight against two AI players. There are nine different multiplayer maps to choose from. However, any given map can accommodate a maximum of four players. This means that a 2v2 with your buddy against the AI is your only option for a comp stomp in Tempest Rising.
Future Updates
Slipgate Ironworks has considered providing custom map support for the game in the future. With custom map support or a dedicated map maker, players can create their co-op missions or even entire campaigns.
For example, in StarCraft 2, Arcade Mode features player-made games, missions, and campaigns, which can provide hundreds of hours of cooperative gameplay. However, there is no word from the developers about official co-op campaigns that are planned for future updates.
