Starting a Final Fantasy adventure might seem like a daunting experience to some, but fear not. This beginner’s guide will provide you with everything you need to know, and then some, before starting your Final Fantasy adventure.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is an open-world action RPG developed and published by Square Enix. It is the latest entry in the long-running Final Fantasy series. However, this does not mean that it is the same as its predecessors.

There are many mechanics relating to exploration and combat that are new to the Final Fantasy franchise. With its release on PC coming soon, many players will be looking to dive into this game. This beginner guide will make sure you’re up to date with all the mechanics of the game. Here’s what you need to know:

Combat Tips

Being an action RPG, combat is one of the most polished features within the game. However, you don’t need to worry too much, as the game offers you a wide variety of ways to deal with problems. You have various equipment, weapons, and Materia to slot onto your Party Members to deal with any problem that may arise. You can also change your party members to suit the situation.

Assess and Enemy Skill Materia

Enemy Skill Materia and Assess Materia are some of the most useful Materia you can use early on. Assess is great for revealing the elemental weaknesses of whatever monster you come across; meanwhile, Enemy Skill Materia gives you access to some powerful abilities.

Using the Assess Materia will also be useful in completing challenges later on, so be sure to use it on any and all manner of entities you come across.

Elemental Coverage

In any combat scenario, exploiting enemy weaknesses is the easiest way to take them down. To accomplish this, you’re advised to ensure that your Party Members who participate in battle can cover a wide range of elemental affinities. This will ensure that you can take down the enemy regardless of their elemental resistances.

One of the best ways to get this coverage would be to use the Duo Materia, like Fire and Ice Materia or Wind and Lightning Materia. These give you 2 elemental attacks in one materia slot, making it extremely valuable early on.

Synergy

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth also features a Synergy system, which is a fusion skill performed by two Party Members acting in tandem. There are two types of moves within this Synergy system. One is Synergy Abilities, and the other is Synergy Skills.

Synergy Skills can be performed anytime, whereas Synergy Abilities require some work to fill up the Synergy meter first before they can be used.

Weapon Proficiency

This is a mechanic that makes a return from its prequel, Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Each weapon has an ability that is unique to itself. However, you can gain this ability permanently if you are able to attain maximum proficiency with the weapon. This is super useful, as it gives you access to the weapon skills without forcing you to use a specific weapon.

Becoming proficient with weapons for all characters will be extremely beneficial in the long run.

Zero MP Elemental Attacks

Yes, you read that correctly. There are some attacks you can unlock that do not cost MP to perform and also deal elemental damage. Moreover, they do not even consume any Materia slots on your character.

To unlock these attacks, simply go into the Folio menu of each character and find the designated icon (recognizable due to the purple-white swirls) and activate them.

Exploration

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has an expansive open world map, which will seem like a daunting challenge for newcomers. However, you do not have to worry, as this beginner’s guide will be covering most of the important points and basics you should know before diving into the world outside Midgar.

Chocobo Quests

Whenever you enter a new region, your first priority should be to unlock that region’s chocobo as a mount. This will reduce the traveling time, especially in the long run. Moreover, you should also consider stopping by any chocobo stops you can find to fix them. This will result in that stop becoming a Fast Travel point.

Remnawave Towers

Chadley and the Remnawave Towers should also be a priority for you to unlock whenever possible. These towers further unlock various other points of interest on your map. Another important point to note is that these towers often contain breakable boxes on them, which contain Moogle Medals. Over time you can gather a good number of Moogle Medals from simply unlocking these towers and breaking the boxes.

Moreover, you should always collect resources whenever you see them. This is because you are going to be doing a lot of item crafting in the game, and you will constantly be in need of materials as long as you keep crafting.

Side Quests

Don’t forget to start and finish side quests, as doing so will increase your party level, and often reward you with good equipment or items. Finishing these quests will definitely be worth it by the endgame.

Intel

There are various types of Intel missions you can complete in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Doing these is a great way to boost your resources, party level, and also strengthen your summons. Specifically, Divine Intel makes the summon fights easier, and also improves your Summon Materia, making this one of the best investments in the game.

Excavation Sites

Be sure to not pass up one of these, as they include some really good crafting recipes that you can use. If you see one, go for it. Crafting recipes can be used in the Item Transmuter to craft the recipes, as long as you have the required materials. This is the main reason why you should be collecting resources whenever you see them. You can never have too many resources (unless you have 99 of them).

That wraps up our Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Beginner Guide. What other tips would you recommend to a new player?
