Phantom Blade Zero: Year of the Snake was announced last year, and over the year, the hype for the game has only trended upwards. Now, with another gameplay trailer released earlier today, the game is once again the talk of the town. The trailer shows off Phantom Blade Zero’s combat scenarios, showing the protagonist taking on multiple enemies at once in beautifully choreographed fight sequences. The setting, too, is hauntingly beautiful, getting us increasingly excited for the game. Yet, the game is still far away and the wait is killing us.

If you’re just like us, you may want to play a game that is similar and scratches the same itch. Below, we’ve listed five games that you can try while waiting for Phantom Blade Zero that should scratch that same itch.

1) Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is one of the best action games of all time. The game takes all the exploration aspects you love from the Soulsborne games and pairs it with an addictive combat system. There is no weapon variety in Sekiro, and the only way to beat the game is to become one with the sword. The game’s setting, too, is absolutely gorgeous, combining the grim dark elements of the Souls series with the aesthetic backdrop of feudal Japan. This is one game you need to play while you wait for Phantom Blade Zero.

2) Ghost of Tsushima

There is not much that needs to be said about Ghost of Tsushima. A simple screenshot of the game tells you all you need to know about the game. While Phantom Blade Zero goes for a more somber color palette, Ghost of Tsushima embraces brighter colors, and each frame comes across as a painting. The game’s combat is the real hook for those awaiting Phantom Blade Zero. The combat scenarios showcase Jin’s samurai skills, constantly having to juggle mobs while utilizing tools. You’ll feel right at home with this one.

3) Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth Wukong is one of the best action games to have been released last year, and it won several awards to commemorate that feat. The game takes a lot of inspiration from the Souls games while also forging its own path with a greater emphasis on cinematic presentation. With what we’ve seen from Phantom Blade Zero, that game, too, focuses on cinematic presentation and visuals. The fast-paced combat also seems right out of Black Myth Wukong’s playbook.

4) Wo Long Fallen Dynasty

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty treads much of the same roads as Sekiro, with Nioh 2 influences sprinkled in. The game throws you into the center of the Three Kingdoms saga and then mixes mystical elements into the story. This concoction of the spiritual-meets-documented history makes for a memorable story. The gameplay, too, exists to serve the story. The fights with the mythical creatures and enemies put you up close and personal against your enemies, with several weapons at your disposal. This is a game you have to play.

5) Devil May Cry 5

It may be an odd choice considering the other entries on this list, but hear us out. Based on all the gameplay we’ve seen from Phantom Blade Zero, the game puts a strong emphasis on large mobs of enemies and then dealing with them using crisp hack-and-slash gameplay mechanics. The gameplay, from all we’ve seen, bears a strong structural resemblance to Devil May Cry 5. Some of the over-the-top mask-wielding characters shown in the trailers, too, would fit right into Devil May Cry 5.
