Gameplay

Ghost of Yotei features some innovative gameplay mechanisms, especially the switch between childhood memories. Whenever you enter Atsu’s childhood home, you can switch between the past and present to experience those cherished memories. This adds more personal and emotional depth, letting players experience Atsu’s cherished past and trauma.
Another notable addition is the Clue System, where Atsu investigates clues as she explores. This unlocks new areas and encounters with valuable rewards. Despite being hunted by many, Atsu can also hunt down various targets with the Bounty Hunt mechanism. If you are in need of quick money, hunting the bad guys around the Ezo is a good choice.
One of the innovative additions is the Camp system. While Atsu sets up a camp under the stars, the game will automatically bring important NPCs, such as vendors and the Sensei of her camp. This can be a quality-of-life enhancement, removing the need to venture out across the open world for upgrades and purchases. The Wolf Pack section in the menu makes this feature further effective, allowing you to track down different members from your wolf pack and what they offer.
Combat

Let’s dive into the Combat enhancements. Unlike Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima, Atsu features an expansive arsenal and toolkit. She wields a wide variety of blades like Katana, Spear, Kusarigama, Odachi, or Dual swords. Each has a unique style and is effective against certain enemies. For instance, Dual swords work best against spear-wielding enemies, while the long Odachi is ideal for taking down big foes. Master every weapon and unlock its upgrade to unleash Atsu’s full potential.
Several powerful enemy attacks cause you to lose your balance and weapon. However, reacting quickly can turn the tide of the battle. Additionally, Atsu can use ranged weapons like a bow or a firearm as well as tools like bombs, kunai, and blinding powder to gain an advantage during combat encounters.
Modes

Sucker Punch Productions is turning Ghost of Yotei into a complete cinema, providing flexibility to experience it as you wish. Whether you prefer playing in English or Japanese, with or without subtitles, it’s up to you. The ‘Samurai Cinema’ mode offers a full Japanese voice track with lip sync, along with English subtitles.
The fan-favorite modes like Photo Mode and Kurosawa Mode have returned to Ghost of Yotei. Inspired by legendary director Akira Kurosawa, Kurosawa Mode features black and white visuals along with film grain, audio filter, and increased wind.
Additionally, Ghost of Yotei also features several other special modes, like Miike Mode and Watanabe Mode, partnering with two other influential directors. The Miike Mode, inspired by Takashi Miike, director of 13 Assassins, features a closer camera during combat, along with more blood and mud splatter. On the other hand, the Watanabe Mode, inspired by Shinichiro Watanabe, director of Samurai Champloo anime, plays Lo-fi tracks during exploration and combat to elevate the experience.
