The ambitious GTA 5 Liberty City Preservation Mod was discontinued after a “mutual agreement” with Rockstar Games.
The GTA 5 Liberty City Preservation Mod shuts down after a mutual agreement between the mod authors and Rockstar Games. The mod faithfully recreates the setting of GTA 4 and transforms it into a mod for GTA 5. The project received a warm reception from GTA franchise fans when announced in 2024. However, the unfortunate takedown leaves fans dismayed and confused about the reasons behind its removal.
Some developers and publishers are fine with having community mods for their game titles. However, some have gone to great lengths to shut down modding communities, citing reasons such as protecting intellectual property or avoiding potential legal risks. Despite the shut down of the GTA 5 Liberty City Preservation Mod, the mod authors remain undeterred, stating their commitment to continuing the creation of mods for the game.
Rockstar Games Takes Down GTA 5 Liberty City Preservation Mod
World Travel, the modding team behind the ambitious GTA 5 Liberty City Preservation Mod, announced that the mod is officially discontinued. According to nkjellman, one of the members of the modding team on Discord, “Due to the unexpected attention that our project received and after speaking with Rockstar Games, we have decided to take down the Liberty City Preservation project.”
Following this, they issued another statement to answer more questions regarding the takedown. Nkjellman stated that it was a mutual agreement and was not akin to a DMCA takedown. They added that despite this, the team will keep their Discord up and will continue to make other mods for GTA 5.
Neither Rockstar Games nor World Travel has provided a clear explanation for the discontinuation of the mod, referring to it only as a “friendly takedown.” As a result, the GTA 5 Liberty City Preservation Mod is no longer available for download. The modding team has also urged players to avoid downloading the now-discontinued mod from third-party sources due to potential security risks.
On the other hand, fans of both the GTA series and the mod speculate that the takedown might be due to Rockstar Games’ potential plans for a GTA 4 remaster. However, they still think this alone does not sufficiently justify the removal of the fan-made project.
