Hydra is probably the most difficult boss fight in He is Coming. The boss splits into different heads, each with distinct mechanics. The Hydra ignores all battle start effects after the first and breaks most builds. The boss has strong regeneration capabilities, e.g., a scaling armor, which can get you worn down quickly.

The Hydra is a multiphase-chained boss fight that can prove to be difficult for even the most formidable players. It’s each head is a mini-boss with its unique mechanics. This article will explore how the Hydra fight works and the most efficient builds for it. It’s time to take on a multiheaded, gargantuan super boss.

How the Hydra Fight Works in He is Coming

The special mechanics and attack patterns for each of its different heads are as follows:

Poison Head

Stacks up poison with each turn. You’ll need to outheal this damage or you’ll rot away before the third phase.

Acid Head

Will burn your armor passively. This attack ignores armor sustain, and you’ll need to cleanse or recover it every turn.

Riptide Head

Will deal frequent chip damage that burns armor and HP. Will weaken glass cannons fast.

Stun Head

Will neutralise your turns. You must resist it or sustain it fully.

The first head is the sole one that will trigger the battle start effects. The other heads count as the same battle.

Effects like bombs, wounded triggers, acid, poison, or stun don’t trigger after the first head. Attack or healing buffs after the first hit do nothing after the opener. This forces you to fight without any warning triggers.

Efficient Builds To Beat Hydra in He is Coming

Regen Builds

These are the most consistent builds to beat Hydra. You’ll need per-turn healing to stay alive for more than three boss phases. This is the best strategy to beat the Hydra.
You’ll need to use:

  • Vampiric Wine (fused if possible)
  • Heart Drinker
  • Sanguine Morphosis
  • Life Root Gauntlet or Staff
  • Tree Bark Egg

Focus on stacking regen, then scale healing. Armor can be an option if healing is good.

Armor Regen Builds

These are the second-best option for this boss battle. Armor can break under acid or riptide attacks. You need armor that’ll refresh every turn for the fight.
You’ll need to use:

  • Squire Shield, Holy Shield, or armor per action gear
  • Redwood Roast for max HP scaling
  • Grail of Purity Purelake Helm or belts that help convert acid to armor.

You’ll also need chip healing. Damage from acid outpaces armor unless you stack triggers.

Hybrid Regen Stun Builds

Stun on hit plus scaling works well. Should be done early.
You’ll need to use:

  • Mirror, Sanguine Staff, Diamond Belt
  • Bassilisk Fang, Twilight Crest, or Riptide Gear
  • Stun on Riptide or Stun every 5 strikes

Only works if you ramp fast and start healing early; should not be delayed.

Pacifist Regen Builds

Very low possibility, but possible. You must use items that’ll scale over time and reward no armor or less aggression.
You’ll need to use:

  • Marble Mirror
  • Sunlight Crest
  • Tree Bark, fused if possible.
  • Life Root Hammer or Staff

You have to rely on avoiding poison and acid entirely. This is nearly impossible without proper rolls. High skill and planning are necessary.

Items That Help in Any Build in He is Coming

  • Mirror: Triple Effect Scaling
  • Purelake Helm:  Healing when armor is active
  • Vampiric Wine: the fused version can be highly effective.
  • Heart Drinker: consistent regen
  • Sanguine Morphosis: random healing on hit

Most bosses are a DPS check, but the Hydra is a healing check. Stack healing, then build around damage. Beating the Hydra might be difficult, but not impossible. Bosses are made to be beaten.
