Find Familiar is a Level 1 conjuration spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 that summons a Familiar to aid you in combat and exploration. Familiars are fey spirits that take the form of an animal. Having a companion in combat greatly increases your chances of success.

In this guide, we shall take a detailed look at the Find Familiar spell and the best tactics to use it well.

What is Find Familiar?

As the name suggests, the Find Familiar spell summons a Familiar for you. It has a 18 m range and uses one Action Point. Familiars can attack on their own but are restricted from using the Help action.

You get a hand in choosing the animal form the spirit assumes. Your options include rats, spiders, cats, ravens, and more. Each comes with a unique trait. The rat, for instance, has an infectious bite that deals 1 damage but can also infect the enemy.

Ways to Use Find Familiar

With an extra animal companion temporarily in your party, you will be at an advantage. You can use them for scouting ahead. Scouts can fly, sneak around, and even turn invisible. The Raven, for instance, can soar through the skies to scout the areas you’re yet to uncover.

They can also be used as a distraction in combat. While they deal minimal damage, they are great at getting the enemy to waste a turn. Every point of damage that the Familiar takes is a point of damage that you escape. This is especially useful when the enemy is very strong, and you need to get it to waste a turn. The cat is ideal for this as it draws any enemy within an 18m range of itself.

Familiars are also great at debuffing enemies. The crab, for instance, can slow enemy movement, while the Quasit can scare enemies and put them in a state of Fright for two turns. These debuffs greatly increase your odds of success in a fight.

All in all, the Familiars are a great tactical tool that you can deploy on the field to divert attention (and damage) from your party. Find Familiar allows you to summon these spirits and turn the tide in your favour.
