Expedition 33 introduces many features of action games into its turn-based formula to distinguish itself from other turn-based RPGs.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, is a turn-based RPG. In fact, Sandfall Interactive has stated that it takes inspiration from other turn-based JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy and the Persona series.
However, this title has a few new tricks up its sleeve. These features set it apart from its inspirations and, indeed, most other turn-based RPGs. Here are all of the ways Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 differs from a standard turn-based RPG.

How Does Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Change Up the Turn-Based Formula

Simply put, Expedition 33 injects features of real-time combat into a turn-based system. What this means is that the combat includes quick time events and other timing-based actions.
Quick-Time Events During Combat
Normally, you would simply press a button and watch as the character executes the designated action. However, this game spices up the formula by adding button prompts in between your attacks.
While attacking, the players will have to succeed at the quick-time events to maximize their damage. The closer you are to perfect timing, the stronger the attack will be.
Reactive Turn-Based Combat

Expedition 33 features a reactive turn-based combat system. What this means is that during an enemy’s attack, players will have to react to the attack with proper timing to dodge or parry the attack. All attacks in the game can be either dodged or parried.
This simple addition completely changes the experience of the game. While in a normal turn-based game, you would simply sit back and take whatever damage the enemy throws your way, Expedition 33 forces you to stay on your toes even during the enemy turn.
Properly defending during the enemy turn becomes even more important thanks to the existence of counters. With proper timing, you can not only avoid damage from an enemy but also deal your own. These counters can be performed by individual characters or even by the whole team. Thanks to this reactive turn-based combat system, grasping victory will require a combination of strategy and skill.
How Else Does Expedition 33 Stand Out From Other Turn-Based Games

According to CEO and Creative Director of Sandfall, Guillaume Broche, Expedition 33 was developed with the goal of creating a high-fidelity turn-based RPG. Indeed, among turn-based RPGs, this title stands out with its extremely high-quality visual graphics.
The game also allows you to play as any of the characters on the team. In many other turn-based RPGs, you are limited to playing as one main character and only take control of other characters during combat. So, it is completely different in this regard, allowing you to explore the beautiful open world as any of the members of the Expedition.
All these reasons together make Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 one of the most unique turn-based games on the market. The game will be released on April 24, 2025, on all platforms.
