SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku’s newest Yakuza spin-off game is almost around the corner. The Yakuza series is known for being campy at times, and Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii seems to be dialing up the eccentricity to 11.

The game is set after the events of the previous game, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and features recurring Yakuza character Goro Majima, stepping into the shoes of a pirate captain. Here are some ways it reinvents and introduces new mechanics and concepts into the series.

The Yakuza series has never before seen you battle using a ship at your disposal. You can use your ship to take down other ships in fast naval combat. You can use a variety of weapons on your ship, like flamethrowers, cannonballs and even lasers!

Alternatively, if you want to personally take the enemy ship down, there’s also an option for you. Set a collision course for the enemy ship and board them to have a real-time crew vs. crew fight against your opponents. Take down the enemy captain and claim victory!

Combat

The combat for Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii seems to be returning to the roots of the Yakuza series. Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth both featured turn-based combat, so this game will be returning to the beat ’em up style of combat.

Moreover, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii also features a new style of combat that has never been seen before for Majima. The Sea Dog style lets Majima use a variety of tools and weapons in tandem with Majima’s chaotic fighting style. You can use two cutlasses, a chain hook, and even a pistol in your combos.

These will fit perfectly with Majima’s new and explosive Sea Dog style.

Although there are locations we have visited in earlier Yakuza games, there are a bunch of new locations that have never been seen before. You start the game on Rich Island, which is a remote fishing village. This also serves as your home base, where you can return from time to time to restock and reorganize your supplies. From here, Majima can go to various different locations via his newly acquired ship, the Goromaru.

One of these is the colorful ship graveyard, Madlantis. Here you can play a number of mini-games and also put your crew to the test in the coliseum. There is also Nele Island, which is covered in nuclear waste and filled with ex-Yakuza members.

Finally, you can head over to Hawaii and relax at the beach. There are a ton of arcade mini-games to play, combined with activities like karaoke and pool. So, take it slow and enjoy the sights.

These were some of the ways in which Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii separates itself from previous entries in the franchise. It seems to have its foot on the gas pedal, with no intention of putting the brakes on anytime soon.
