Before becoming well-known on the social media site, he was an engineer at NASA for nine years, helping build the Mars Curiosity rover. Rober also spent four years as a product designer in the Special Projects Group at Apple.
His interest in engineering began at a young age, and he showed his curiosity and work ethic by inventing a set of goggles that stopped tears from forming when he chopped onions. Taking this passion and talent to college, Mark Rober majored in mechanical engineering at Brigham Young University. After that, he became a graduate student at the University of Southern California, where he earned a master’s degree.
Mark Rober’s Career and YouTube Growth
Rober began working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2004. He worked there for nine years, seven of them devoted to the creation of the Curiosity rover, a car-sized rover intended to investigate Mars’ Gale Crater.
Mark Rober also created hardware for several missions launched by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Some projects were the Soil Moisture Active Passive, the Mars Science Laboratory, and the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory.
Rober began creating videos on a variety of subjects while he was employed at NASA. These included escape room strategies and April Fools’ Day pranks. Additionally, many of his videos focused on scientific topics like sand fluidization and water filtration.
In October 2011, Rober posted his debut video on YouTube. He appeared in the video wearing a specially designed Halloween costume. It was manufactured using two iPads, giving the impression that his body was translucent. In the end, this video went viral, receiving over a million views in a single day. This kick-started his YouTube career, and ever since, he has accumulated a massive following of over 60 million subscribers.
