Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a free-to-play racing simulator about training horse girls for upcoming competitions. For the three years of training in each Career Mode run, you will largely focus on upgrading your uma’s stats to the maximum with training. All five stats can be trained separately, and training one stat may provide a small boost to others. However, not all stats are created equal, and spending time on the right ones is crucial in securing your uma’s victory. This guide will highlight the functions of each stat and which events require training them the most.

As soon as Career Mode begins, you can begin training all the stats, including speed, Stamina, Power, Guts, and Wit. Each training session consumes energy except for Wit training, which increases it marginally. Your uma’s energy level dictates the chance of training succeeding, which improves mood. In turn, a high mood provides greater bonuses with each session. However, failing training leads to a loss of mood, which makes it less efficient. While each stat has an important role to play in the final competition, some are far more important than others.

Speed

Speed dictates the top speed of the horse girl and is the most important stat in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. For short-distance races, you need to maximize your top speed at the cost of nearly all other stats. For medium- and long-distance races, speed is still the number one priority, but other stats gain importance as well.

Race DistanceRecommended Speed
Short1000+
Mile900+
Medium800+
Long900+

Stamina

If the speed stat is an uma’s engine, Stamina is the fuel that powers it. Also referred to as the health of an uma during the race, having Stamina allows a horse girl to maintain her top speed. If she runs out of Stamina, the uma will run at a fraction of her top speed, which will likely cost her the race.

While you can forgo training Stamina for short-distance events, it is the most important stat following speed for medium- and long-distance events. Although Stamina is incredibly important, you can get away with ignoring it somewhat if you have Stamina-replenishing skills in your deck.

Race DistanceRecommended Stamina
Short400
Mile600
Medium800
Long1000

Power

The Power stat determines an uma’s acceleration and her overtaking capability. Therefore, rather than being important to any one event, the Power stat gains relevance depending on an uma’s running style. Training Power is crucial for Late Surger and End Closer running styles, as they will have to overtake several horse girls. Without a good Power stat, your uma can get stuck behind another racer in the pack, throttling her top speed.

For Front Runners and Pace Chasers, having between 400 and 600 Power is more than enough. However, Late Surgers and End Closers will have to invest heavily into power, anywhere between 600 and 1000, depending on the event.

Guts

Guts serves as a secondary Stamina reserve for your uma, allowing her a second wind if she runs out of Stamina. It is the least important stat to train, but it has the potential to come in clutch at pivotal moments. Your uma should generally have around 300 Guts at any given event.

Wit

Wit determines the skill activation chance of your uma and minorly affects several performance metrics like Stamina preservation, positioning, and avoiding mistakes. Although Wit’s effects may seem intangible at first, they can add up to provide a great advantage. To leverage the benefits of Wit, ensure that you have 400+ Wit for all racing events.
