Adding modifications to weapons in Cyberpunk 2077 requires you to open the in-game menu, select Inventory, and then Weapons. You need to choose the weapon, the empty mod sock, and then the available mod that you want to install. Check out the tier of the mod before applying.

To add modifications to a weapon in Cyberpunk 2077, follow these steps:

  • Open up the in-game menu and go to Inventory.
  • Navigate to Weapons and select the one you want to add modifications to.
  • Provided the weapon has an empty mod slot, you can click on it and then select the available mods for the same.

Can you replace or unequip mods from weapons?

You cannot replace or unequip mods from weapons in Cyberpunk 2077. This was possible before Patch 2.0 and the mechanic has since been removed. Now, you will notice a “Slot Already Filled” notification coming up if you try to replace an already-installed weapon mod with another one. There is an exception to this norm though, namely the Chimera Mods.

What are Chimera Mods?

Chimera Mods (Firecracker, Wallpuncher, Hackatomy, Severance) are special modifications that are made from the Active Chimera Core. They can be unequipped from weapons. You can get the Active Chimera Core after defeating the Militech Chimera during the Spider and the Fly mission (Phantom Liberty Main Job). You get only one Active Chimera Core per playthrough and thus can craft only one of the available Chimera Mods.

Cyclone, Wallpuncher, and Equalizer are some of the best weapon modifications in Cyberpunk 2077 during our playthrough. Cyclone allows you to make unlimited combo attacks from 2-4 seconds while performing a Sprint Attack along with a successful attack adding a +5% attack speed buff for 2 seconds. This mod can be a significant part of a melee build lover’s arsenal.

Wallpuncher requires you to have played the Phantom Liberty DLC and defeated the Militech Chimera to get the Active Chimera Core. It provides the option to charge a weapon to 200% of its capacity, along with +100% armor penetration and no penalty for penetrating cover. Finally, Equalizer gives you an added edge when facing Elite enemies, adding +4-20% damage.

Additional Weapon Modifciations

Other great weapon modifications in Cyberpunk 2077 that we found during our playthrough that you can try out are:

This can open up different positive outcomes for players during combat if enemies get randomly impacted by a quickhack. Keep in mind this is a Chimera Mod and only one can be active during a playthrough.

Better Half

  • Effects: The mod adds +10-20% crit damage chance to the second half of your weapon’s magazine.
  • Where to get: Weapon Vendor provided level 40 or higher / Tier 4 Better Half mod dropped upon completing 1R-0NC-LAD quest
  • Type: Ranged Weapon Mod
  • Base Rarity: Tier 4
  • Why we like it: While you will need to keep in mind that you should not spam reloads without finishing your magazine with this mod on, Better Half adds a happy boost as you shoot through half of your clip.
Other Considerations

When considering customizing your weapons in Cyberpunk 2077 with modifications, keep in mind the level of the weapon you are attaching the mod to. It will be counter-productive to attach such to low-level weapons since mods can’t be removed (other than the Chimera Mods). Similarly, you should try to craft/find higher tiers of the mods you prefer, if possible. You also need to see which of the weapon modifications available to you suit your current build and playstyle.
