The Grasptropod is a boss fought in Chapter 6 of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Grasptropod is the mechanical boss manufactured by Shinra who fights the party during Chapter 6 at Costa Del Sol. You will need to pick your party carefully to ensure that you’re able to match its weaknesses and mechanics.
This boss is a little bit unique in this sense, as you have to decide your party members between Barret/Aerith and Tifa/Red XIII. Here is everything you need to know before you make your decision.
How To Fight Grasptropod?
Grasptropod is the final boss of Chapter 6. You will be able to fight him after you’ve obtained the special outfits for Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa via the Character Coupons. This fight starts after a small series of cutscenes with Hojo.
Here, Cloud will be prompted to pick a team to fight with. This can be either Barret and Aerith or Tifa and Red XIII. Whichever team you don’t pick will not be usable for the Grasptropod fight. Therefore, it is advised to sort your equipment and Materia accordingly, based on who you will be taking into the boss fight.
Note: Your relationship will be affected by your choice above.
Grasptropod Stats
Easy | Normal | Hard | |
HP | 14,216 | 20,309 | 78,532 |
Using the Assess Materia on this boss gives us a lot of information to use. The Grasptropod is weak to Lightning, like most other machines. It does have a lesser resistance to Ice, so keep an eye on that.
Additionally, it also has a number of immunities to status ailments. These are:
- Proportional Damage
- Berserk
- Slow
- Stop
- Poison
- Silence
- Sleep
- Stone
- Petrify
- Morphable Items
How To Defeat the Grasptropod?
Scanning this foe with Assess Materia will give us the start to the strategy for beating it. The enemy intel informs us that using Synergy Abilities or Skills will cause it to become Pressured. This should be the first opportunity you use to capitalize and build up some stagger.
Furthermore, you should also note that the Grasptropod will start capturing your teammates over the course of the battle. This will remove the usage of Synergy Abilities for the remainder of the battle. You will know this is happening when you see the move “Subject Retrieval.”
Keep using Lightning spells or attacks to maintain pressure on the Grasptropod. You should also preferably have Healing Materia on all your party members, as they will keep getting captured one by one, rendering them useless for the remainder of the fight.
After both your party members have been taken away by the Grasptropod, it is up to Cloud alone to fight the boss. When you see the Grasptropod use Subject Retrieval again, Yuffie will interfere to help you. Ramuh is also a good Summon choice here due to its Lightning attacks, which will allow you to pressure and stagger the Grasptropod more easily.
From here on, you have to steadily fight this machine and bring it down to 25% HP. This will trigger phase 2 of the fight.
Phase 2
In this phase, the one move you have to watch out for is mentioned in its intel. When the Grasptropod uses Breakneck Spin, you should be ready to block or counter. This move will cause the boss to overheat and feel Pressured. This window should allow you to use Lightning magic to stagger the boss and unleash your high-damage moves.
Lastly, watch out for any status ailments the boss tries to inflict on you. Some of these are Silencing Solvent (Silence) and Sublimated Toxin (Poison).
If you keep the above points in mind, the fight should be over soon, and you are free to proceed.
