Quetzalcoatl is an optional boss found within the Grasslands of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The item you get from beating this boss is called “Quetzalcoatl’s Talon,” which is needed to complete the Where Wind Blows side quest.

This boss may be difficult to locate, unlock, and fight due to its requirements. Here is everything you need to know about Quetzalcoatl.

Quetzalcoatl is a hidden boss, meaning you cannot normally fight it without completing its requirements. To fight Quetzalcoatl, you must have visited and analyzed at least four out of the six Lifesprings present within the Grasslands area to complete the respective Expedition Intel Reports.

Upon doing so, Chadley will mark the location of Quetzalcoatl on the map. This will be the Classified Intel: Winged Lacertilian of Yore marker. You can now fight Quetzalcoatl, so you can proceed to the boss fight.

Simply enter the area and hold the Triangle button as it prompts on the top right corner of the screen to engage with the boss.

Quetzalcoatl’s Stats

Quetzalcoatl will have varied stats and HP depending on your game mode.

Quetzalcoatl will be weak to Ice, so any Ice Materia, abilities, or spells will be sure to come in handy. Quetzalcoatl mainly prefers Thunder-element attacks, so try your best to minimize this damage.

Using the Assess Materia on Quetzalcoatl will reveal this weakness along with its numerous lesser resistances and immunities. This boss has lesser resistance against Slow, Poison, Stop, and Morphable Items. So don’t waste your time trying to inflict any of these status effects on it.

On top of these Resistances, Quetzalcoatl is also equipped with some Immunities. It will be completely immune to any Proportional Damage and Stone, so Petrify will be useless for this boss fight.

Now that you know everything there is to know about Quetzalcoatl, you are finally ready to tackle this dragon-bird hybrid (at least according to the Monster Assessment Instrument).

Your first tips to defeat Quetzalcoatl in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are revealed through the Assess Materia. The Assess Materia points out that inflicting enough damage by exploiting its elemental weakness will pressure it. Moreover, every time it transitions between the ground and the air, it is preparing a heavy attack. Be sure to get out of the way!

Your first strategy should be to hit it as soon as it’s pressured from using Ice attacks. Exploiting its weakness will make it pressured frequently, giving you ample time to build up its stagger meter with various abilities. Barret’s Focused Shot, saved for when the boss is pressured, should let you build up a lot of stagger in a short amount of time.

Aerith could also come in handy, as you could keep using Ice spells from far away after casting Arcane Ward, which will make all offensive spells be cast twice. In this case, it will result in twice the number of Ice spells being cast at once, significantly racking up damage on the boss.

Tifa is also another reliable party member to use during this boss fight, as she can help increase the stagger damage once the boss gets staggered.

Equipping Shiva as your summon for this fight would be the best choice to further take advantage of the glaring Ice weakness the boss has. Summoning Shiva will definitely give you an advantage if you need it.

Attacks To Avoid

There are some attacks that you should watch out for during the boss fight. Two of its dangerous moves are Fulmen and Spark Snare. Fulmen is used by the winged beast to blast lightning toward whichever character is currently selected by you. So be ready to evade at a moment’s notice. For Spark Snare, get as far away as possible. The boss is getting ready to unleash lightning everywhere around itself in an area, so retreating backward for a moment is the safest tactic.

Keeping up the pressure with repeated Ice spells and attacks and unleashing Shiva near the end should see you put this winged beast down for good. You will now obtain the prize you came for: Quetzalcoatl’s Talon, which you can use to complete the Where Wind Blows side quest.
