Learn strategies to beat the Fort of the Damned in Sea of Thieves with tips on preparation, tactics, and rewards.
The Fort of the Damned is one of the most challenging and rewarding encounters in Sea of Thieves. It requires careful preparation, teamwork, and quick thinking. Here’s how you can activate, complete, and master this fort for legendary loot. In this guide, we will explore everything you need to know including the tips and tricks to beat the Fort of the Damned in Sea of Thieves.
How To Activate the Fort of the Damned Raid
To beat the Fort of the Damned raid, gather specific resources. You will need one Ritual Skull and all six Flames of Fate.
Get All Six Flames of Fate
Flames of Fate are unique colored lights obtained by dying in specific ways. Each color corresponds to a distinct type of death. For example, you earn the green flame by dying to skeletons and the blue flame by dying to sharks or Megalodons. Collect these flames from the Ferry of the Damned, then light the lanterns on your ship to keep them safe. Below is a table to help you with the information about all the flames:
Flame Color | Name | How to obtain |
Blue | The Flame of Lost Seafarers | Die by a shark, siren, or Megalodon. |
Red | The Flame of Burning Hearts | Die by fire, volcanic rocks, or lava in The Devil’s Roar. Firebombs are the easiest option. |
Green | The Flame of Cursed Bones | Die by a skeleton, ocean crawler, or phantom. |
White | The Flame of Treacherous Weather | Die by lightning during a thunderstorm or from a stun by the Eel-ectric Ocean Crawler. |
Purple | The Flame of the Viper | Die by poison from a snake bite or a poison cloud from the hermit ocean crawler. |
Pink | The Flame of Embattled Souls | Die at the hands of another player from a different crew. |
Get One Ritual Skull
The Ritual Skull is another essential item to beat the Fort of the Damned in Sea of Thieves. There are various ways to acquire a Ritual Skull. Sail to islands and look for Emergent Skeleton Captains. Defeating these Captains drops a Villainous Bounty Skull and Skeleton’s Orders, which lead to a chest that may contain a Ritual Skull.
Engaging in a Skeleton Fleet or Skeleton Ships event also provides opportunities, as every Skeleton Ship has a chance to carry a Ritual Skull, and the Captain’s Ship guarantees at least one. Additionally, defeating an Ashen Lord in the Ashen Winds world event ensures a Ritual Skull drop.
Once you have all the materials, sail to the Fort of the Damned at coordinates L-14 in The Ancient Isles. Inside the main room, light the six Ferryman statues with their corresponding flame colors. After lighting all the statues, a cage with a headless Skeleton will open. Place the Ritual Skull (or Skull of Destiny) on the Skeleton’s neck to activate the event.
How To Complete the Fort of the Damned
When the Raid begins, prepare for twelve waves of Shadow of Fate skeletons. These enemies are unique because they can only be damaged after you shine the correct flame color on them. For example, use a pink flame for pink skeletons. The flame color you need appears as ghostly hands beneath a Ferryman statue.
During the fight, switch between weapons and lanterns efficiently. If you have a Skull of Destiny, place it nearby to quickly cycle through flame colors. After surviving all twelve waves, the final boss, Graymarrow, appears. He is a powerful foe with high health and devastating attacks. Use gunpowder barrels scattered across the island to deal significant damage, or lure him to your ship and attack with cannons.
Rewards You Will Get From the Loot
Defeating Graymarrow rewards you with a key to the treasure room beneath the fort. Quickly collect the loot and load it onto your ship. You will get all these things from the loot:
- Ix Chest of Legends
- 2x Reaper’s Bones chests
- 2x Stronghold Chests
- 2x Crates of Ancient Bone Dust
- 4x Stronghold Skulls
- 4x Stronghold Gunpowder Barrels
- 4x Gunpowder Barrels
- Ix Collctor’s Chest
- 4x random Mermaid Gems
Tips To Quickly Beat the Fort of the Damned in Sea of Thieves
1. Use Gunpowder Barrels:
- The island provides around 10 regular barrels, with more spawning during Shadow of Fate waves.
- Save Stronghold Gunpowder Barrels from the vault of the first raid for later uses.
- Around 8 Stronghold Barrels or 40 regular barrels can kill Graymarrow effectively.
2. Trident of Dark Tides:
- Highly effective against Graymarrow, dealing 2.5x damage to NPCs.
- Requires only 3–4 Tridents to eliminate him.
3. Lure to the Pier:
- Draw Graymarrow to the bottom pier near your ship.
- Use cannons to bombard him; about 100 cannonballs can finish the fight.
- Anchor your ship to avoid it being pushed out of range by shockwaves.
4. Harpoon Strategy:
- Assign a crew member to use the harpoon on Graymarrow.
- Harpooning briefly stuns him, making cannon shots more accurate.
5. Firebombs:
- While not highly damaging, firebombs help track Graymarrow’s location.
- The flames remain visible through cannon smoke, aiding teammates.
6. Cursed Cannonballs:
- Use Green Cursed Cannonballs to slow Graymarrow and the Shadows of Fate.
- This hinders their attacks and creates openings for damage.
7. Keep Distance From Explosive Skeletons:
- Shadows of Fate carrying Gunpowder Barrels can harm your ship if you are too close.
- Position your ship safely but within the cannon range.
8. Optimize Resources for Multiple Runs:
- Reserve Stronghold Gunpowder Barrels for future Fort activations in a single session.
