Civilization 7 is all about building your own eternal empire by expanding through diplomacy and war. As you expand your empire, settlement by settlement, you will require roads to connect each individual piece of this empire. Roads in Civilization 7 allow you to connect settlements and establish trade routes, which, in turn, help your empire flourish. Roads are also useful for your units, making their traversal across the lands easier. These roads, therefore, are the building blocks of your legacy and are crucial if you wish to thrive in the game.

Building roads is a fairly simple process but often gets complicated due to the game info-dumping so often and blasting you with several tutorials. If you somehow missed how to build roads and are struggling with expanding your empire as a result, our guide has you covered. In this guide, we shall go over how to build roads in Civilization 7.

The simplest way to build a road is to build more settlements. Yes, you read that right. Building more settlements constructs roads automatically for you. Build a settlement in the vicinity of another, and a road will automatically emerge, connecting the two. These settlements have to be close for the road to spawn, so build these settlements within a five-tile radius. Take note that this will only happen if the terrain is flat with no other obstacles clogging the way. As long as the path is clear, you will have the roads you need.

You can also use your merchant to connect your settlements. To form connectivity with another settlement, you first need to send a merchant over to the settlement you wish to connect to. Once you’ve done so, click on your Merchant Unit to bring up a small menu on the bottom right. Then, click on the third button from the left, which reads “Build Road to Settlement.”

Merchants are also ideal for forming trade routes with other nations. Send a merchant over to any of the nations you wish to link with, and then click on your Merchant Unit. This will bring up a tab on your left, detailing all the possible trade routes. Establish any trade route, and it will build a road connecting you to the other nation.
