Phasmophobia is all about dealing with the supernatural in a quest to gather evidence and survive. You and your group of friends are tasked with capturing evidence of ghosts across various locations. As most ghost encounters tend to go, these encounters, too, turn hostile. Surviving a hostile supernatural entity is a tough ask and one Phasmophobia fully acknowledges by allowing you to change the game’s difficulty.

The game offers varying levels of difficulty to pick from, all of which serve to affect the ghosts’ behaviors. Those seeking a challenge can increase the difficulty, too, making the ghost an absolute demon to deal with. Regardless, if you’re looking to change your experience to make it easier or harder, you want to change the game’s difficulty. If you don’t know how to do so, our guide has you covered. In this guide, we shall go over how to change the difficulty in Phasmophobia.

How To Change Difficulty

Phasmophobia features a variety of difficulty settings, as listed below in increasing order:

  • Amateur difficulty
  • Intermediate difficulty
  • Professional difficulty
  • Nightmare difficulty
  • Insanity difficulty
  • Apocalypse difficulty

You change the difficulty by selecting the ‘Edit’ icon next to the ‘Difficulty’ box in the game’s mission lobby. While the game features six different difficulties to pick from, you don’t have access to all from the get-go. You start at the lowest tier, the Amateur difficulty, and then work your way up to the higher levels. You can also opt for Custom difficulties, which allow you to tweak your experience to your liking. But we recommend going through the difficulty presets first to experience the game as intended.

This is the first difficulty you unlock, intended for those just starting out with the game. This difficulty features:

  • Long setup times.
  • Long hunt grace period.
  • Short hunt duration.
  • Sanity pills restore a lot of sanity.
  • Ability to regain half of the lost equipment value if you die.

Unlocked at Level 10, the Intermediate difficulty is the second difficulty in the game. This difficulty features:

  • Average setup time.

  • Average hunt duration.
  • Sanity pills restore some sanity.
  • Fuze Box starts off.
  • Fewer places to hide.

This is the “Standard ghost hunting experience” and is the definitive way to experience the game.

  • Rare changes to the ghost room.
  • No setup time.
  • Short hunt grace period.
  • Long hunt duration.
  • Reduced sanity restoration.
  • Fuze Box starts off.

Nightmare Difficulty

Beyond the professional difficulty, the stakes are raised much higher, and the missions grant higher XP. The Nightmare difficulty unlocks at Level 30 and features:

  • Ghosts will hide one type of evidence.
  • Ghost room changes from time to time.
  • No setup time.
  • Short hunt grace period.
  • Long hunt duration.
  • Kills increase hunt duration.
  • Reduced sanity restoration.
  • Fuze Box starts off.
  • Almost no hiding spots.

Insanity Difficulty

The second hardest difficulty in the game, the Insanity difficulty, unlocks at Level 40 and is only for those “feeling truly brave.” This dreaded difficulty includes:

  • Ghosts hide two types of evidence.
  • No cursed possessions.
  • Ghost rooms change often.
  • No setup time and reduced sanity.
  • Short hunt grace period and fingerprint duration.
  • Long hunt period, with increments for every kill.
  • Reduced sanity restoration.
  • Fuze Box starts off.
  • Almost no hiding spots.

Apocalypse Modes

The Apocalypse Modes are special Challenge Modes that raise the difficulty higher by forcing you to face your fears all alone in the Sunny Meadows. The Apocalypse Modes are a must for those looking to unlock the lucrative Apocalypse trophies in Phasmophobia. In these Apocalypse modes, you have to match your reward multiplier score throughout the game with a designated target score to complete the Apocalypse challenges and, thereby, the modes.
