Everything you need to know about the difficulty presets in The First Berserker Khazan, how to change them, and their impact on gameplay.

The First Berserker Khazan is a souls-like, albeit with some twists. Unlike most games in the souls-like genre, The First Berserker comes with multiple difficulty presets, akin to traditional hack-and-slash/action games. Upon starting a fresh playthrough, the game defaults to the Normal preset. However, after a specific threshold, the game gives you the choice to switch to a more “easier” difficulty mode.
However, the difficulty presets in The First Berserker Khazan aren’t nearly as straightforward as they are in most action games. Instead of making the game easier or harder, the difficulty presets simply adjust the amount of damage you take from certain enemy attacks.
Furthermore, the game also has certain trophies/achievements locked behind specific difficulty presets. Here’s everything you need to know about the difficulty settings in The First Berserker Khazan.
What Are the Difficulty Presets in The First Berserker Khazan?

In The First Berserker Khazan, you have access to two difficulty presets – Easy and Normal. The default preset is Normal, which is also the intended difficulty for the game. However, for players that might be new to the souls-like or action RPG genre, there’s also the Easy preset.
Although, unlike other action RPGs, the easy preset in The First Berserker doesn’t reduce enemy aggression or attack power. Instead, it simply buffs the player’s defensive stats, aiding in their survivability. Other than that, both the Easy and Normal presets are essentially identical. The Easy difficulty is a great way for players to go through the story with relatively less friction.
However, if you’re experienced with the souls-like genre, it’s best to stick with the Normal preset. The difficulty presets in The First Berserker Khazan work quite similarly to Remnant 2, where the Easy (Casual) preset simply increases the player’s defenses.
Apart from the difficulty presets, The First Berserker also features other accessibility and difficulty modifiers. There’s a leveling system without any limitations. You can essentially grind “Lacrima” to become overpowered before a boss encounter. Furthermore, there’s also a spirit summon mechanic (Spirit of Advocacy), akin to Elden Ring or Lies of P.
And much like in Lies of P, you can upgrade the Spirit of Advocacy’s attributes, including base HP, attack power, and endurance.
How To Change the Difficulty Presets?

When you start a fresh playthrough in The First Berserker Khazan, you’re booted into the Normal difficulty by default. However, if you die too many times to the same enemies or a boss, the game automatically gives you the option to switch to the Easy Mode preset. Furthermore, you can change the game’s difficulty at any time during gameplay by simply going to the Accessibility tab in the Options menu.
Do note that you will need to restart a checkpoint after switching difficulty. Furthermore, if you switch from Normal to Easy, the change is irreversible. You cannot switch back to Normal after that. To play the game in Normal, you will need to start a fresh playthrough. The First Berserker Khazan features a dedicated trophy for completing the game on Normal difficulty – The Expert’s Journey. Switching to Easy mid-playthrough will cancel the progress towards this trophy.
