The Monster Hunter series is notorious for its steep difficulty curve and rough onboarding of new players. Although Capcom has made major strides at streamlining the series for newcomers, it’s still far from perfect. In fact, the Monster Hunter series, to this date, is still considered one of the toughest RPGs to get into, especially if you’re new to the genre. And despite my deep-rooted appreciation for the series, I do agree that the Monster Hunter games can be incredibly intimidating for new players. Even before you get into the meat and potatoes of the game, i.e., hunting monsters, you’re faced with the choice of picking your starting weapon.

While choosing a weapon is a simple process in most RPGs, it isn’t that straightforward in Monster Hunter games. Here’s everything you need to know about choosing the right weapon in Monster Hunter games, and how to properly master it.

Weapon Types in Monster Hunter Games

In the original Monster Hunter, you had a total of 4 weapon types – Great Sword, Hammer, Sword and Shield, and Lance. For the international release of the game, Capcom then added another new weapon type to the game – Dual Blades. The original intention of the developers was to centralize the series’ combat within these 5 core weapon types.

However, as the series reached more players over the last couple of decades, Capcom eventually ended up roughly tripling the weapon variety. As of now, the series boasts 14 different weapon types. Here are all the weapon types in modern Monster Hunter games (including the upcoming MH Wilds):

  • Great Sword
  • Hammer
  • Sword and Shield
  • Lance
  • Dual Blades
  • Long Sword
  • Gunlance
  • Switch Axe
  • Charge Blade
  • Insect Glaive
  • Bow
  • Heavy Bowgun
  • Light Bowgun
  • Hunting Horn

Suffice it to say that with that many options at your disposal, it’s quite easy for a newcomer to get overwhelmed. However, if you spend some time with these weapons, you will easily be able to figure out which one is the right choice for you.

Choosing the Right Weapon Type in Monster Hunter

Onboarding a newcomer in a Monster Hunter game can be a cumbersome task. However, almost every entry in the franchise, even the original Monster Hunter, comes with plenty of tutorials and tips that should help you navigate the intricacies of its mechanics.

However, Monster Hunter, unlike other traditional RPGs, isn’t a pick-up-and-play experience. You have to devote considerable time to these games. Trust me, understanding the nuances and mechanics of Monster Hunter isn’t particularly difficult. However, to do so, you will need to spend a good chunk of your playtime with the game’s “Low Rank” and tutorial sections.

Choosing the right weapon is all about spending time with each weapon type and trying to connect with the game’s combat system. Regardless of what kind of playstyle you prefer in games, there’s always one Monster Hunter weapon that’s going to connect with you.

Tips To Figure Out the Right Weapon Type in Monster Hunter

Here are some tips that should help you choose the right weapon type in a Monster Hunter game:

  • Try the Training Area: For newcomers, the Training Area is essentially the most important locale within Monster Hunter. As soon as you complete the prologue and get access to the Training Range, I highly recommend spending some time trying out all the 14 weapon types. This will help you decide which weapon type feels most natural and easy for you to use.

  • Replay Low Rank Hunts: Replaying the Low Rank hunts is a great alternative to the Training Area. Since Low Rank monsters have significantly lower HP, you won’t be spending too much time hacking away at them. Furthermore, trying out new weapons on LR monsters also gives a good idea of their effectiveness in combat and also your build.

  • Experiment with different weapons: Even if you settle on a particular weapon type, I still highly recommend trying out other weapon types, at least for the Low Rank and High Rank quests. Experimenting with different weapon types will help you craft different builds for specific monsters (or elemental affinities). And you never know, you might just end up finding an entirely new favorite weapon type.
