If you’re a fan of re-battling your “archenemy” several times in a game, you’ll love facing Louis Guiabern. The big bad of the RPG comes back for a rematch several times. Or let’s say that the Protagonist goes to him repeatedly.

Either way, he makes up for an entertaining opponent despite the bloodshed and constant humiliation. Since we face many versions of Louis during the main story, we will focus on the standard one for now, because you will face this form of him more than once.

On one occasion, he will engage in combat in the Montario Opera House. The next time, there is a public confrontation where all the fellow citizens watch you fight him in Grand Trad. Both times, Guiabern will be in his standard form, nothing fancy. But there are still some details you should get acquainted with.

Picking the Best Characters and Archetypes

This is the most important aspect of combat in this game, no matter who the battle is against. However, it becomes even more crucial when facing Lord Guiabern because he keeps a keen focus on the Protagonist. We wouldn’t want to spoil the reason for you. Keep Junah, Hulkenberg, and Heismay in your party and respectively assign them as Masked Dancer, Magic Knight, and Assassin Archetype. As for the Protagonist, make them the Trickster.

There’s a reason behind this selection, and much of it has to do with the fact that in this form, the infamous boss doesn’t have any weaknesses or resistance to some specific Status. This makes the fight a little simpler to understand.

Here Comes the Main Part

We don’t just pick any Archetype or character because not every skill is compatible or as effective with every combination. Some work best when mashed together. Players often perfect this art as they progress in the game. But if you feel lost, note that skills like Matarukaja, Rakukaja, Sable Dance Synthesis, Assassinate, and Godkiller can be useful when used correctly.

He will usually use Royal Coercion, his favorite attack, against the Protagonist. This will significantly lower the Damage and Defense. So, there’s no point to let the Protagonist hold aggro. Instead, debuff the antagonist by ordering your main character to use Vidyartha to lower Louis’ Attack and Defense. Skills like Matarukaja and Rakukaja will buff your own party’s offense and defense.

Use the Masked Dancer’s Sable Dance Synthesis to apply the Dark status effect on the boss that has been giving you trouble all this while. Soon after, you can use the Assassinate Skill to deal massive damage. You can also use the Godkiller skill from the Assassin to put Louis in his place if he is trying to bring you down too much.

Unfortunately, though, no matter how hard you try, you will have to fight him again otherwise the story would have been too different. So, make sure to go in prepared for this fight and give your best. All the re-matches against Guiabern will reward you differently. As usual, you’ll receive a good amount of EXP, A-EXP, MAG, and Reeve.
