Everything you need to know about the Grosse Tete boss in Clair Obscur Expedition 33, including its location, how to defeat it, and more.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is chock-full of some of the most creative boss fights ever seen in an RPG. From the towering Bourgeons to the rather annoying Petanks, the game has a ton of variety when it comes to boss fights. And while a good majority of these bosses are incredibly fun to fight, some do end up being quite confusing (and excruciatingly difficult, for all the wrong reasons). One such boss is the Grosse Tete, which is a massive, boulder-like creature that, despite its rather simplistic attacks, can be incredibly difficult to beat, even with end-game builds. The Grosse Tete is technically an optional boss. However, considering the rewards it has to offer, you don’t really want to miss out on this battle.
Unfortunately, taking down the Grosse Tete isn’t nearly as simple as it might look. It’s one of the few “gimmicky” bosses in the game, that can be a bit difficult to understand and defeat on your very first attempt. To help with that, here’s a comprehensive guide on the Grosse Tete in Clair Obscur Expedition 33, and how to easily defeat it.
Where To Find Grosse Tete in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?

Gross Tete is an optional overworld boss that you can find close to the Coastal Cave portal. However, before you can fight this boss, you need to complete the first few main story chapters in Act 2, i.e., up until the end of Old Lumiere. Once you finish Old Lumiere, you will unlock Esquie’s ability to swim through the corals. The Coastal Cave is on a separate island-like area, as shown on the map above. Right in front of the Coastal Cave portal, you will find the Grosse Tete standing and waiting for a battle. Do note that, unlike most enemies, the Grosse Tete doesn’t attack or even follow you until provoked. You have to attack the boss first to start the boss fight.
Additionally, it’s a boss fight that’s available pretty early in the game. However, we recommend tackling Grosse Tete after you have completed Act 2 and unlocked the 9999 damage threshold. That way, you will have a better chance at surviving the boss’s attacks and also dish out a good chunk of damage. Furthermore, while Grosse Tete does hit quite hard, it doesn’t one-shot you with its attacks. As long as your party members’ Vitality is at 3,000+, it shouldn’t be much of a hassle to survive the boss’s combos.
That said, dealing damage to the Grosse Tete emerges as a tricky prospect since you won’t get many chances to do so. Thankfully, there are ways to easily defeat the boss, granted you can counter its attacks.
How To Defeat Grosse Tete?

As mentioned earlier in this article, Grosse Tete is one of the “gimmick bosses” in Clair Obscur Expedition 33. It’s essentially a test of your parrying skills and nothing else. The basic principle of defeating the Grosse Tete is that you need to successfully parry 24 of its attacks, without failing a single counter. Basically, you have to flawlessly parry 24 of its attacks, and doing so will result in the boss automatically detonating and dying. Once countered, the Grosse Tete gets tired and explodes, without you having to deal a single tick of damage. However, if you fail to parry its attacks, the boss will constantly keep on attacking you for a long time.
Furthermore, First Strike doesn’t work against the Grosse Tete, and neither does dodging. During our testing, we found parries to be the only viable option to defeat the boss. Thankfully, the Grosse Tete only has a single combo chain, which it repeats ad nauseam. The combos start slow with a 6-hit string. However, once you parry the first wave of attacks, the boss ramps up the speed of its combos, dishing out 20-hit combos. Parrying the Grosse Tete isn’t that difficult either. You can check our dedicated parry and counterattack guide for more details.
Once you defeat the Grosse Tete, you will be rewarded with 67,500 XP, 1 Resplendent Chroma Catalyst, and the Warming Up Pictos. The Warming Up Pictos is incredibly powerful as it increases base attack by 5% (up to 5 stacks) on every other turn.
