Monster Hunter Wilds’ flagship monster, Arkveld, is easily the toughest challenge in the Open Beta. Much like Nergigante and Magnamalo before it, the encounter against Arkveld is a test of not only your combat skills but also efficiency. Although the weapons and armor you have access to in the Beta are Low Rank, Arkveld itself is a High Rank monster. Suffice it to say, that alone makes the encounter against the chained behemoth an incredibly difficult undertaking.
If that was not enough, the Arkveld Advanced Quest has a time limit of just 20 minutes. This not only makes the battle difficult but also somewhat unfair, considering most quests in the Beta have a time limit of at least 30 minutes, if not more.
However, despite that, it is possible to defeat Arkveld. Although it’s a difficult battle by design, it’s not an impossible one. Here are some tips that should help you fight and defeat Arkveld in Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta.
Arkveld’s Weaknesses and Strengths in Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta

Arkveld is one of the new monsters debuting in the series with Monster Hunter Wilds. Although it looks a lot like a Flying Wyvern or Elder Dragon, it’s classified as neither of those. Instead, Arkveld is part of a yet unknown “Extinct Species” category of monsters. Even though you can fight (and defeat) Arkveld in the Beta, you won’t be able to extract much information from it.
However, while fighting Arkveld, we did find out a few things that might be of interest. Although the monster seems to be using a Thunder/Paralysis ailment with its chains, it’s in fact a Dragon Element. Furthermore, Arkveld, based on the quest description, is capable of siphoning elemental energy from other monsters.
Although there isn’t any Turf War for Arkveld in the Beta, the main game will likely have a few. During those Turf Wars, Arkveld might siphon elemental energy from other monsters. This might also hint at the monster’s ability to shift elements, akin to Alatreon. As for breakable parts, Arkveld’s forelimbs, horns, and tail are breakable rather easily (in the Beta). You can also break the monster’s back, but since it’s armored, it’s not as easy as other parts of its body. It should be noted that elemental damage doesn’t seem to have much effect on Arkveld.

Here are a few tips that should help you defeat Arkveld in Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta:
- Equip the Balahara or the Doshaguma set. You can mix and match different parts of those two sets to get different perks. However, if you want to go with the complete set, that’s also fine. The reason behind picking these sets over others is Dragon Resistance. Both Balahara and Doshaguma sets offer Dragon Resistance, which will come in incredibly handy against Arkveld.
- Make sure to use Focus Strikes and Offset Attacks as much as possible. The primary goal of the quest is to deal as much damage as possible before Arveld is enraged. Think of the battle as similar to Alatreon’s DPS-check phase ahead of Escaton Judgement. Once the monster’s enraged, you won’t get too many windows to dish out damage.
- Blocking/Perfect Blocking is totally viable against Arkveld, even if you’re using Great Sword. Arkveld’s whip attacks can be easily Perfect Blocked as long as you keep yourself at a medium distance from the monster. It should be noted that executing a Perfect Block twice will initiate a Clash and does not exhaust your Sharpness gauge.
- Use faster melee or ranged weapons, if possible. While Arkveld can be defeated using slow and more damaging melee weapons, such as the Great Sword, Hammer, or Hunting Horn, given the monster’s agility, doing so is not going to be easy. As such, if possible, it’s best to use a faster weapon like Dual Blades, or Charge Blade. Or, you can just use ranged weapons like the Bow, to easily defeat it.
Managing the Time Limit
Lastly, do note that Arkveld is made to feel like an insurmountable challenge. This has always been a thing with flagship monsters in Monster Hunter Betas. Monster Hunter Rise’s Beta featured its flagship, Magnamalo, with a 15-minute time limit. Despite the incredibly high difficulty, these monsters can be defeated within the set time, albeit with a lot of practice and perseverance. Furthermore, if you’re having a tough time with Arkveld, you can always use the SOS feature to call in help from Support Hunters or other online players.
