Unlocking the As Close as You Like trophy in Silent Hill 2 Remake is much easier than it might initially look. To get the trophy, you essentially need to complete the entire game without using any ranged weapons, i.e., firearms (guns). You can use guns on inanimate objects or to solve certain puzzles, but not in combat. The game keeps track of how many enemies you kill and the method(s) you use to dispatch them. Although it might seem quite a daunting task at first, getting through the entirety of Silent Hill 2 Remake’s main story without firing a single bullet is much easier than you think. In fact, under certain scenarios, sticking to melee combat over guns is the path of least resistance.

The melee combat, at least on the first playthrough of the game, is admittedly quite janky. That’s perhaps on purpose, to make protagonist James feel underpowered against the overwhelming odds he has to face throughout the story. However, on repeat playthroughs of Silent Hill 2 Remake, the melee combat gets a significant buff, courtesy of the Chainsaw weapon. The Chainsaw is the key to unlocking the As Close as You Like trophy Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to easily unlock the As Close as You Like trophy in Silent Hill 2 Remake.

Prerequisites for the As Close As You Like Trophy in Silent Hill 2 Remake

To unlock the As Close as You Like trophy, you need to complete Silent Hill 2 Remake without killing any enemies using ranged weapons. This means you cannot use any of the guns (Handgun, Shotgun, and Rifle) on enemies and also, bosses. The only way to obtain this trophy is to stick to melee options for combat. There are a total of three melee weapons in Silent Hill 2 – Wooden Plank, Steel Pipe, and Chainsaw. The Wooden Plank and Steel Pipe are the only options you will have on a standard playthrough. Whereas, the Chainsaw is exclusive to Silent Hill 2’s New Game Plus mode, which unlocks after completing the game at least once.

The best way to go about getting the As Close as You Like trophy is to do a New Game Plus playthrough and use the Chainsaw as your only weapon. Additionally, you can knock down the difficulty to Light preset to make combat encounters easier. Similarly to the Radio Silence trophy, As Close as You Like can be unlocked on your first playthrough. However, not using guns (at least on the very first playthrough of the game) does make some of the late-game encounters significantly more challenging.

To summarize, here are the prerequisites to easily unlock the As Close as You Like trophy in Silent Hill 2 Remake:

  • Start a new playthrough in New Game Plus.
  • Pick up the Chainsaw and use it as your primary weapon for the entire playthrough.
  • Turn the difficulty down to Light, to make combat encounters easier.

How to Unlock the As Close as You Like Trophy

The best strategy to unlock the As Close as You Like trophy in Silent Hill 2 Remake is to play the game in New Game Plus. That way, you’ll have access to the Chainsaw. Furthermore, it’s best to go for the Dog ending so that you can skip the final boss encounters. You can also club in other trophies like Radio Silence and Faster Than Fog within the same playthrough. The Chainsaw basically one-shots most enemies in the game (including the Nurses). As such, with that weapon equipped, you won’t even have to use any ranged options anyway. The only downsides to using the Chainsaw are the “funny poses” that James often ends up performing after a kill.

These “poses” or “emotes” lock you into an animation that can leave you vulnerable to enemy attacks. Thankfully, James doesn’t perform these actions often, or at all, during boss fights.
