Monster Hunter Wilds features a total of 50 trophies that you can unlock as you progress through the game. Although a good majority of these trophies unlock automatically as you progress through the main campaign and endgame, some of them do require an extra bit of effort. Thankfully, unlike in the case of Monster Hunter Rise and Sunbreak, most of the trophy descriptions perfectly explain the requirements.

As such, it’s not particularly difficult to figure out what you need to do to unlock all the trophies. That said, there is one trophy that does have an incomplete description that can leave you scratching your head – Top of the Food Chain.

Although the requirements for this trophy are quite straightforward, the description is somewhat incomplete/wrong, which can be an issue for players who plan to get the Platinum for the game. Here’s everything you need to know about the Top of the Food Chain trophy in Monster Hunter Wilds and how to unlock it.

According to the in-game description of the Top of the Food Chain trophy, unlocking it requires you to hunt 50 Apex Predators. Hunting monsters isn’t particularly difficult in Monster Hunter Wilds. As you progress through the main story, you will have to hunt way more than 50 monsters. However, since the trophy requires you to hunt specifically the Apex Predators, it can be a bit tricky to unlock. The biggest hurdle to unlocking the trophy is—Apex Predators isn’t an official category of monsters in the game. It’s essentially a term attributed to monsters that serve as the “final boss” of a region of the Forbidden Lands.

For instance, the first Apex Predator that you get to hunt in the main story is Uth Duna, in the Scarlet Forest. This is followed by Rey Dau in Windward Plains, Nu Udra in the Oilwell Basin, and finally, Jin Dahaad in the Iceshard Cliffs. However, in-game, these monsters aren’t categorized as Apex Predators. Instead, the game mentions their species, based on their “skeleton.” For instance, in the case of Jin Dahaad, the game categorizes it as a Leviathan, without ever mentioning Apex Predator in its description.

Naturally, this can get some players confused as to which monsters fall under the Apex Predator category. Furthermore, there are other monsters like Xu Wu and Arkveld, who also show up as the main boss(es) in Ruins of Wyveria. As such, some players might even think that these monsters are also counted as Apex Predators. However, Xu Wu and Arkveld aren’t considered Apex Predators. As such, they don’t count towards the Top of the Food Chain trophy’s progress.

Here are the monsters that you need to hunt a total of 50 times, to unlock the Top of the Food Chain trophy in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • Rey Dau (Windward Plains)
  • Uth Duna (Scarlet Forest)
  • Nu Udra (Oilwell Basin)
  • Jin Dahaad (Iceshard Cliffs)

In addition, there’s another requirement for the trophy that the game fails to properly explain. While the trophy’s description only mentions “hunt 50 Apex Monsters,” it essentially means you need to “slay” said Apex Monsters. Capturing monsters does not contribute towards getting the trophy, despite it being counted as a “hunt.”

Lastly, both Tempered and regular variants of the Apex Monsters count towards the trophy’s progress. Additionally, both Low Rank and High Rank versions of the Apex Monsters are valid for the Top of the Food Chain trophy.

How To Unlock the Top of the Food Chain Trophy?

To unlock the Top of the Food Chain trophy, you need to slay a total of 50 Apex Monsters. Do note that the total number of Apex Predators slayed needs to be 50. This means that you don’t necessarily need to hunt 50 of the same monster. Make sure that the total number of Apex Monsters (Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Nu Udra, and Jin Dahaad) hunted adds up to a total of 50.

The best method to unlock the trophy is to partake in SOS hunts. SOS and multiplayer massively expedite the process of hunting monsters. Furthermore, you can significantly speed up the process by going for the Low Rank versions of the Apex Monsters.
