Different types of ghosts can be identified using various equipment and by observing their behavior in Phasmophobia.
Kinetic Games’ Phasmophobia is a psychological horror game that launched in Early Access in 2020. Finding evidence and identifying the ghosts in haunted locations is the primary goal of the game. However, there are over 24 different types of ghosts, each possessing unique abilities and behavior, making every ghost encounter unique and haunting.
Learning the behavior of each ghost is essential to surviving the haunted location while effectively collecting the evidence. Players can use popular paranormal devices such as EMF Readers, Spirit Boxes, Thermometers, and Night Vision Cameras to investigate ghost activities. This guide explains how every ghost-hunting equipment works along with which ones are required to identify each type of ghost.

All Equipment to Identify Ghosts Evidence in Phasmophobia
Collecting evidence is the standard method of identifying ghosts in Phasmophobia. Normally, you need to find three pieces of evidence to identify the ghost, but it reduces to two in Nightmare and Insanity difficulties. Collecting evidence is essential, as it gives you the knowledge necessary to determine the type of ghost you are facing. There are seven ghost-hunting equipment in Phasmophobia, used to collect evidence against different types of ghosts. Here is how each of them works:
- D.O.T.S Projector: When the ghost enters a “D.O.T.S state”, a silhouette will appear.
- EMF Level 5: Use the EMF reader on objects or doors after a ghost interaction. A level 5 reading on the EMF reader indicates the evidence of the ghost’s existence.
- Ultraviolet: Shine the UV Light on objects the ghost interacts with to reveal fingerprints or footprints in salt. While the fingerprints last 2 minutes normally, they fade within 1 minute in higher difficulty modes.
- Freezing Temperatures: If a thermometer shows 0.9°C (33.6°F) or lower, it confirms the freezing temperature.
- Ghost Orb: Look for small, gliding orbs using video cameras. They move randomly and can be harder to spot in snow or fog.
- Ghost Writing: Place the book in the ghost’s room and wait for it to appear and interact. Removing other props may increase the chances of ghost interaction with the book.
- Spirit Box: Ask questions by turning the lights off in a room. Ensure to stay within the ghost range to get a response from it.
All Ghosts in Phasmophobia: Equipment, Hunt Threshold, and Behaviour
Every type of ghost has unique behavior and abilities, as well as a specific sanity threshold required to initiate the hunt. Their varying behavior leaves evidence that can only be detected using certain types of equipment. The following table provides a complete overview of all the ghost types, their behavior, hunting thresholds, and the equipment needed to gather evidence.
Ghost Type | Equipment | Hunt Threshold | Unique Behavior |
Banshee | Ultraviolet, DOTS, Ghost Orbs | 50% sanity (only for target) | Locks onto one player and hunts them at 50% or below sanity. Switches the target once the previous player is dead. Use a Parabolic Mic to listen to their unique screech. |
Demon | Ultraviolet, Ghost Writing, Freezing Temperatures | 70% sanity (any sanity when the ability is used) | Can start hunts at any sanity. They have a shorter cooldown between hunts. Crucifixes double the covering range compared to other ghosts. |
Deogen | Spirit Box, Ghost Writing, DOTS | 40% sanity | Always know your location and they are extremely fast. Becomes slower when they spot you. Leaves a low growling sound when using Spirit Box at a 30% chance. |
Goryo | EMF 5, Ultraviolet, DOTS | 50% sanity | Never changes its ghost rooms. DOTS evidence is only visible via camera. |
Hantu | Ultraviolet, Ghost Orbs, Freezing Temperatures | 50% sanity | Cannot turn the fuse box on. They leave a ghost breath during hunting if the electricity is off. As they like cold areas, they rush faster in such areas when they spot you. |
Jinn | EMF 5, Ultraviolet, Freezing Temperatures | 50% sanity | Cannot turn the fuse box off. Speeds up significantly when it sees you. |
Mare | Spirit Box, Ghost Orbs, Ghost Writing | 40% sanity in light/60% sanity in dark | Can immediately turn lights off after you turn them on. Scared of light. |
Mimic | Spirit Box, Ultraviolet, Freezing Temperatures | Any | Mimics the behavior of other ghosts. Always produces Ghost Orbs. |
Moroi | Spirit Box, Ghost Writing, Freezing Temperatures | 50% sanity | Speeds up when your sanity decreases. Cursed player loses their sanity faster. |
Myling | EMF 5, Ultraviolet, Ghost Writing | 50% sanity | Incredibly quiet during huntsMakes more ghost noises at the Parabolic Mic. |
Obake | EMF 5, Ultraviolet, Ghost Orbs | 50% sanity | Often shapeshifts the appearance during the hunt. Leaves strange handprints with extra fingers or thumbs |
Oni | EMF 5, Freezing Temperatures, DOTS | 50% sanity | Performs more ghost events. Blinks faster than other ghosts during hunts. |
Onryo | Spirit Box, Ghost Orbs, Freezing Temperatures | 60% sanity (any if firelights are blown out) | Blow out firelights to trigger a hunt |
Phantom | Spirit Box, Ultraviolet, DOTS | 50% sanity | Difficult to track during hunts due to long blinks. Does not appear in photos. |
Poltergeist | Spirit Box, Ultraviolet, Ghost Writing | 50% sanity | Throws items further and can even throw multiple items at once. |
Raiju | EMF 5, Ghost Orbs, DOTS | 65% sanity (near electronics) | Speeds up significantly around electronics. |
Revenant | Ghost Orbs, Ghost Writing, Freezing Temperatures | 50% sanity | Slow when it doesn’t spot you. Becomes extremely fast when it spots you. |
Shade | EMF 5, Ghost Writing, Freezing Temperatures | 35% sanity | They are very shy. Will not interact or hunt when you’re in the room. |
Spirit | EMF 5, Spirit Box, Ghost Writing | 50% sanity | No special abilities. The hunting interval is three minutes. |
Thaye | Ghost Orbs, DOTS, Ghost Writing. | Up to 75% sanity | Speeds up when your sanity decreases. The cursed player loses their sanity faster. |
The Twins | EMF Level 5, Spirit Box, Freezing Temperatures | 50% sanity | Since they are two ghosts, they interact with objects more than others. Each Twin has a different speed when hunting. |
Wraith | Teleport to a random player’s location. Do not leave footprints in salt. | 50% sanity | Ages over time, becoming weaker and less active as the investigation progresses. Highly aggressive and active but will slow down noticeably when you are in the same room with them. |
Yokai | EMF 5, Spirit Box and DOTS | 80% sanity (when using nearby voice chat) | Becomes more aggressive when players talk near it. Has reduced hearing range during hunts. |
Yurei | Ghost Orbs, Freezing Temperatures and DOTS | 50% sanity | Interacts more with doors than any other objects. Closes the doors completely. |
