The ability to identify items in Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) is pretty crucial to your in-game growth. Here’s a quick way of doing it.
Path of Exile 2 will have you confronting several gear pieces while exploring, and the ability to identify those items can come in handy. There are a few reasons why you would want to do that.
The primary reason is to pick up better gear for yourself and leave the ones that you have already equipped. While there are items that don’t require you to identify them to use them efficiently, these are generally not that beneficial.
The most conventional way of identifying an item in PoE2 is by using a Scroll of Wisdom. You can visit Una in Clearfell Encampment and buy them for 25 gold per piece. As you can tell, this is not a sustainable method, and you may want to steer clear of it in the long run.
Once you buy the scroll and have picked up an unidentified item, open the inventory, select the Scroll of Wisdom, and then select the item you wish to identify. Those who play on consoles can also use the Square button (PlayStation) or the X button (Xbox) to highlight a piece of equipment for identification.
But does that mean there is also a free way of identifying items in Path of Exile 2? The short answer is yes!

How To Identify Items for Free in Path of Exile 2?
Apart from the conventional yet expensive way of identifying items, there is one more way that lets you do it for free. For that, however, we hope that you have been keeping up with the campaign.
By the middle of Act 1, you will come across a quest called Sorrow Among Stones. After completing it, a quest called Mysterious Shade will unlock. Complete it to unlock the Hooded One NPC.
He will be revived at your camp. Having been freed from imprisonment, he probably feels indebted to the player. As a result, the humble NPC identifies items and passives for free and can also reset the latter for you.
While this is a cost-effective method, we suggest that you keep some Scrolls of Wisdom with you when you go exploring. This will allow you to swap gear on the go and not wait until you return to the Hooded One.
