Investing in shops boosts merchant gold caps in Oblivion Remastered, helping you sell high-value loot more efficiently.

Most vendors in Oblivion Remastered allow you to invest in their shops when certain conditions are met. Contrary to what the term suggests, investing, in this case, means increasing the total available gold for a merchant. This is especially useful for players who frequently sell high-value loot but find their sales limited by a shopkeeper’s base gold.

The total gold available to a merchant is determined by their Mercantile skill. Investing in their shop will increase their total gold by 500. To invest in a shop in Oblivion Remastered:

  • Reach level 75 (Expert) in Mercantile.
  • Speak to a vendor, preferably one with high available gold to begin with.
  • Choose the “Invest 500 gold in this shop” dialogue option.
    • You need to have 500 gold for the option to appear.

The vendor is delighted and assures you that your investment will allow them to purchase more goods from you. Note that reaching Expert Mercantile adds 500 to all shops. Investing adds an additional 500, increasing total gold by 1000 from the base amount. This will allow most merchants to have between 1,600 and 2,200 gold, depending on their Mercantile skill.

Mercantile skill leveling has been overhauled in the remaster. In the original, you gained a small amount of experience per transaction, regardless of quantity or item price. In Oblivion Remastered, Mercantile XP gain increases with the item’s price. This means selling high-value loot is the fastest way to increase Mercantile skill.

Leveling by selling goods can still take a significant amount of time, making Mercantile trainers an attractive option for quick skill progression. Additionally, completing the ‘A Shadow Over Hackdirt’ side quest in Chorrol rewards you with +5 levels in Mercantile. Skill books are another way to get instant level-ups.

How To Restock a Shop in Oblivion Remastered

A merchant’s stock and gold reset after three in-game days. After purchasing all of a particular item from a shop, you may need the merchant to replenish their stock. This is usually the case with alchemy vendors who sell cheap goods that allow you to make potions using them and turn a profit.

To restock a vendor’s goods, go three in-game days without entering their shop or interacting with them. You can access other similar vendors in the meantime. After three days, the merchant’s full stock and gold were replenished.
