Monster Hunter Wilds retains most of the features that fans associate with the series. The latest title comes with everything you would expect from a traditional Monster Hunter game, from its somewhat complicated weapon upgrades and crafting systems to its various combat nuances. However, that’s not to say Capcom did not make any notable changes to the game compared to its predecessors. One of the biggest new features that Monster Hunter fans will benefit from is, well, the ability to “pause the game.” Although it might sound trivial, but a “pause game” feature has not been a part of mainline Monster Hunter games since the series’ inception.

Even Monster Hunter World, which was touted as the quintessential “Monster Hunter experience” for newcomers, did not feature a dedicated “pause button”. However, with their latest mainline title, Capcom has finally added the ability to pause the game, albeit with some caveats. Here’s everything you need to know about how to pause the game in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Unlike other traditional role-playing games (RPGs), pressing the options button or going into the Crafting menu won’t automatically pause Monster Hunter Wilds. Instead, you will have to select the dedicated Pause Game option from the menu to do so. You can find the Pause Game option under the Systems tab. However, the Pause Game option will only appear if you’re playing the game in Offline or Online Single Player modes. If you’ve joined an online lobby with other players, you won’t be able to pause the game. Furthermore, if you’re playing the game in a Private Lobby, you still won’t be able to pause Monster Hunter Wilds.

Essentially, as long as you’re playing solo, either offline or in the Online Single Player mode, you can pause the game. Furthermore, during these modes, you can also access the pause game feature in the Photo Mode. If you want to quickly access both Photo Mode and Pause Game features during gameplay, you can map them to the Radial Menu. You can edit the Radial Menu at any time either via a Campsite or the main menu.

How To Pause Using Photo Mode in Monster Hunter Wilds

Within the Photo Mode, you can simply press R3 or RS on your controller to pause the game. This allows you to not only take a breather but also adjust a specific scene while using the Photo Mode. Do note that Photo Mode is also accessible only in single-player modes. However, unlike Pause Game, Photo Mode can be accessed in a Private Lobby as well. However, when you’re in a Private Lobby, you cannot pause the game using the Photo Mode.
