Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth took everything that made Final Fantasy 7 Remake good and kicked it up a notch. One of these aspects that has seen significant improvement is the combat system. The combat in Rebirth features a simple-to-understand system of Synergy Abilities.
During the battle, characters can team up with one another to perform signature Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities. Both of these are different from one another. Synergy skills are easier to perform and can be used anytime, unlike Synergy Abilities which require building up the Synergy meter to perform.
What Is the Difference Between Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities?
Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities can confuse many due to their similar naming convention. A two-point difference can clear up this confusion:
- Synergy Skills can be used anytime, without requiring any setup. Synergy Abilities need to be charged by performing normal Abilities and using Spells.
- Synergy Skills are performed by holding the ‘R1’/block button along with ‘Square’, ‘Circle’, ‘Cross’, or ‘Triangle’. On the other hand, you can open the ‘Command’ Menu and simply select the ‘Synergy Ability’ tab to use the skills of the same name.
How to Use Synergy Abilities
Two of your party members can come together to perform a special move, called a Synergy Ability. The ‘Synergy’ meter is what allows you to use these strong fusion skills involving multiple party members.
This meter gets charged up in the bottom right corner of your screen, right below your character’s HP. Additionally, you can gain this charge by using up most of your normal Abilities or Spells by spending ATB.
You can check whether a Spell or Ability will be contributing towards your Synergy meter by checking the bottom left corner of your screen when using them. Consequently, this lets you plan out your battles in the long term. You can charge your Synergy meter at the right time, by planning out your skills in advance. Timing your Synergies at the right time could be key to achieving victory in battle.
How to Unlock Synergy Abilities
Every character possesses a Folio menu. Throughout the game, you unlock various skills and stat boosts for your characters through this menu. Moreover, it is this same menu through which you acquire these various Synergy Abilities.
You can use Maghnata Books or the Folio Vending Machine to acquire more abilities. However, it is not as easy as it sounds. In addition to this, you will need to raise your Party Level to unlock more skills, some of which are these powerful Synergy Abilities.
The Buffs
Each Synergy Ability, in the Command Menu has a small icon next to it. This corresponds to the type of buff it will be providing when used. Each Synergy Ability provides one of four buffs. These are denoted by four symbols:
- Two Yellow Upward Markings: Raise the level of Limit Break
- Pink/Purple Infinity: Unlimited MP to character for a limited time
- Orange/Red Hourglass: Increases damage against Staggered enemies, and also increases duration of Stagger
- Blue Rectangle/Battery: Splits your ATB meter into 3 instead of 2, allowing for more uses of moves which consume ATB.
