Hyper Light Breaker, the long-anticipated sequel to the well-received Hyper Light Drifter, has finally been released in Early Access. The game, despite being a sequel to Hyper Light Drifter, forges its own path by being a 3D open-world rogue-like, a stark contrast to the original. Hyper Light Breaker is the talk of the town, with people running in droves to play the game.

However, many single-player-only players have been put off by the co-op nature of the game. Throughout the game’s marketing, it has been presented as a co-op experience, and the game’s relevant tags state so too. If you’re a single-player-only gamer wanting to see what the hype is about, worry not; you can play Hyper Light Breaker solo.

Play Solo or With Friends

“Play alone or with friends to explore open worlds, create new builds, rip through hordes, and overcome the Crowns and the Abyss King,” Hyper Light Breaker’s game description reads on Steam. Take note, however, that the game very much feels balanced for groups of players at this moment. The game is challenging and feels like something better handled with a group. Whether this is by design or is simply a byproduct of the game being in Early Access, we do not know.

Playing solo is as simple as booting up Hyper Light Breaker and getting into the game. Playing co-op, however, requires you to head to the hub world and set up a multiplayer lobby. You can then adjust settings as you see fit and launch the lobby. Alternatively, you can join other lobbies or get invites.

Should You Play Solo or Co-Op

As we stated earlier, Hyper Light Breaker is a challenging game. Combat is an essential part of the gameplay loop, and tackling large mobs may seem like an insurmountable hurdle at times. The game scales the difficulty with the number of members in your party. But, despite the challenge being harder with friends, it comes across as more balanced. When tackling large mobs, you can use friends to divert attention and split the enemy groups. This allows for great strategy and rewards cohesive teamwork, an element missing from the solo experience.

The downside of playing co-op is the chance to roll bad teammates. If you’re not playing with friends and queuing with randoms, your experience can be entirely unpredictable. You may roll bad or uncooperative teammates, who may sour the experience for you. Furthermore, playing with others will deprive you of the chance to master the game’s mechanics and intricacies. Hence, unless you have friends who have purchased Hyper Light Breaker, we recommend experiencing it solo to master its mechanics.
