Marvel Rivals, since its recent release, has exploded in the multiplayer hero-shooter scene. While the game is structurally quite similar to Overwatch and other hero-shooters in the market, it does offer a more engaging experience thanks to its intelligent use of Marvel’s superhero roster.

Furthermore, despite its straightforward hero-shooter approach to game mode, the underlying gameplay is quite unique, mixing the usual first-person or third-person shooting with a fair share of hand-to-hand melee combat. It is this uniqueness of the game that drew millions of fans toward the game, making it one of the most successful hero-shooters in recent memory.

Although the majority of the Marvel Rivals player base is on Steam, the game is also available on PlayStation 5. However, given the competitive nature of the title, is it worth playing on the PS5, or are you better off playing it on PC? Let’s find out.

Is Marvel Rivals Free To Play on PS5

Yes, much like on Steam, the PS5 version of Marvel Rivals is free to play. Similarly to PC, Marvel Rivals does feature microtransactions for in-game cosmetic rewards on PS5, but the base game is entirely free to download and play. Although the game’s majority player base is on PC (Steam), the console versions also have a rather healthy player count.

Furthermore, the game has crossplay across all platforms. As such, regardless of where you choose to play Marvel Rivals, you will be able to team up with your friends. Also, crossplay makes it easier for players to match with other players, even if the player count is lower on the platform they’re using.

Furthermore, given Marvel Rivals isn’t solely focused on ranged combat, with melee playing a big role in the game’s combat, it’s quite easy to play using a controller. Characters like Moon Knight, Hulk, and even Wolverine are some of the characters that feel quite natural to control using a controller. However, it should be noted that in order to play Marvel Rivals with your friends on PS5, you will need an active PlayStation Plus subscription (any tier).

Does Marvel Rivals Run at 60fps on PS5

Yes, Marvel Rivals runs at a locked 60fps on PS5. Furthermore, the game features a VRR mode that lets players unlock the frame rate. However, unless you have a VRR-capable display, it’s best to use the default 60fps mode to avoid frame rate fluctuations. Although the game employs upscaling to output a 4K image, the game is relatively crisp and looks quite sharp even on a big 4K display.

Furthermore, the base rendering resolution of the game is quite close to 1440p, which makes it perfect if you plan to hook your PS5 to a 1440p monitor and use VRR for reduced latency. As a bonus, Marvel Rivals also comes with support for DualSense haptics.

All in all, Marvel Rivals is very much worth playing on the PS5. There are obvious downsides to doing so, like the lack of native keyboard and mouse support and the PlayStation Plus requirement for multiplayer. However, if a PS5 is all you have and can look past the few shortcomings, Marvel Rivals feels right at home on the PS5.
