Sea of Thieves has made it to the new year 2025. But the big question is, should you still play it? When it came out, it was a “one-of-a-kind” experience for the gaming community. We hadn’t experienced a multiplayer pirate game before, and it was an interesting treat. But that was 7 years ago!

Yes. Sea of Thieves first came out in 2018. It was surely re-released for PS5 in 2024, but the game still remains largely the same. So, is it worth it if you are looking to jump into it in 2025? Or should you even be continuing it now? These are the questions that we will try to find the answers to today.

Since the game is largely a multiplayer experience, we will judge it based on the current player count. Moreover, we will also take into account the art style, graphics, and gameplay experience that the game provides and see if it still lives up to it.

Multiplayer Aspect

The game’s all-time player count peak on Steam was 66,632. But now, at the time of writing, the player count has reduced to a 24-hour peak of 8,437. The actual player count must be way higher because the game is also available for Xbox and PS5. So, even after all these years, I’d say the game is running fine within the community.

Since you don’t typically queue for PvP arenas like in Call of Duty, Sea of Thieves doesn’t need big numbers to make the experience worthwhile. However, multiplayer is a huge aspect of the game, and if the players continue dropping beyond it, the servers may not last long enough. As for 2025, though, the game looks good for you to continue your journey. And if you wish to start anew, we would suggest bringing along some friends to make your journey easier.

Graphics and Artstyle

Sea of Thieves has a cartoonish art style. The game doesn’t aim to bring realism to the table with the art style or graphics. So, this may not be the type of pirate game you were looking for if you wanted some intense visuals along with demanding gameplay. The game is surely chaotic, but the visuals are not that impressive.

You can have a fun time with your friends for sure. But if you consider 2025 the era of realistic-looking games, Sea of Thieves might disappoint you. In fact, a lot of games would, because not all games aim for realism. However, if you can have fun with a cartoonish-looking game, you should go for it!

Chaotic Gameplay

Sea of Thieves is no short of chaotic. The gameplay is intense and demanding for all players. If you and your crewmates have boarded a ship, everybody will have to work together to keep it afloat and sink others. Similarly, in the case of exploration, you need to rely on each of your crewmates to stay alive successfully.

So, if you like some old-fashioned co-op fun, this game is for you. Not to forget that the PvP battles can make up for some hilarious moments in the game.

We think if you are looking for some chaos with your friends, Sea of Thieves will be worth it to you in 2025. However, a solo experience can be a little stressful.
