The release of Star Wars Outlaws is just around the corner, and many are wondering what kind of game it will be. While the information available is limited, Ubisoft has been very open about the type of game it is going to be. Star Wars Outlaws looks to be a huge open-world experience, set in the the universe we all know and love.

What Makes an Open-World Game?

Star Wars Outlaws fits the bill of an open-world game. While open-world games can differ in setting, tone, and even gameplay, they all share several common features typical of this particular genre. Star Wars Outlaws has most of these features in spades.

Here are the elements that typically render a game eligible for the open-world tag:

  • Large, Explorable World: An open-world game has a huge, immersive world that can be explored without too many loading screens or interruptions. Players should be able to make discoveries along the way. It is filled with secrets, side-quests, and loads of content, which may even deviate from the overarching story.
  • Non-Linear Gameplay: Players should be free to play the game in whatever order they like, with only minor roadblocks to participating in some events, typically for story reasons. They should be able to ignore the main story for as long as they like, with or without story consequences. Side quests and optional activities should be available in abundance.
  • Freedom of Choice: Players should feel like they can do whatever they want to do in an open-world game. Their choices should matter and have lasting effects on the environment and the NPCs they meet. They should be allowed to decide if and when they do any mission, and not feel forced down any path.

While these aren’t the only characteristics of an open-world game, they are definitely the main pillars. Star Wars Outlaws fits the bill by checking all of these boxes.

Star Wars Outlaws is an Open-World Game with Multiple Worlds

As a game where you can fly to several different worlds, Star Wars Outlaws is more of an “open-worlds” title. It has already been revealed that Kay Vess can travel freely between Tatooine, Toshara, and more. The developer, Massive Entertainment, has stated that they did everything they could to stay true to the source material while still making the game interesting and fun to play.

Players will be able to explore old favorite worlds like Tatooine and completely new creations like Toshara. These worlds will have side quests, points of interest, and mini-games, among other things. So far, we know Kay Vess plays Arcade Games in the cantinas, collects treasures from hidden caches, and gathers information from enemy bases.

Undoubtedly, this barely scratches the surface of all the things Kay Vess can do without even playing the main quest. And, we haven’t even talked about everything that can be done in space. All in all, Star Wars Outlaws will be a huge open-world game with hours upon hours of content.
