YouTube streamer Herschel “Dr Disrespect” Beahm founded the game studio Midnight Society in 2021. His team promised a fresh take on the battle royale genre, but the studio shut down before its first game was released. The studio announced its shutdown on January 30, 2025, leaving countless backers concerned about their investment.

Midnight Society priced the early access keys at $25 and special non-fungible token (NFT) keys at $50. The prices of the NFT keys peaked at around $700, and fans are concerned about a market crash. Many invested in the game in hopes of making a profit, but with the game shutting down, the NFT prices will likely drop.

The studio experienced layoffs in 2024, and it hadn’t posted a major development update in over a year. Midnight Society’s early access experience was criticized by journalists and players alike, and many expected the project to never take off.

Midnight Society Cancels DEADROP and Shuts Down

The game development studio apologized to its fans and announced DEADROP’s shutdown. In an official announcement, the studio addressed its fans by saying:

“Today we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers contributing to our new IP DEADROP. We are actively seeking other game studios interested in offering employment opportunities to our talented team members. If you know anyone who’s hiring please forward this message to them or DM us for direct intros. We express our sincere gratitude to every one of our community members and deeply sorry we were unable to reach our ultimate goal.”

The DEADROP betas received poor feedback, with many players complaining about broken textures and poor gunplay. Others criticized the use of NFTs in the game. The game conducted promotions through free access key drops, but it failed to secure enough early access backers.

DEADROP’s Cancellation Coincides With Dr Disrespect’s Remonetization

Dr Disrespect is currently not a part of Midnight Society. The YouTube and Rumble streamer was accused of and admitted to inappropriately messaging an underage audience member. He claimed that he did nothing illegal, and no one pressed official charges. However, Midnight Society conducted an independent investigation and cut ties with him.

The streamer returned to streaming in September 2024, but his channel was demonetized. He continued streaming because YouTube allowed him to earn money from direct donations. The streamer also addressed the allegations upon his return by saying in a now-deleted tweet:

“Were there Twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes. Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more. Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed.”

On January 30, 2025, Doc announced that YouTube remonetized his channel. Many internet users are celebrating the streamer’s remonetization and Midnight Society’s shutdown because of how the studio cut ties with Doc. Others are criticizing the streamer and want him deplatformed.
