Getting into a new Monster Hunter game can be a daunting task, even for series veterans. While the modern Monster Hunter games have come a long way from their slow and clunky roots, they are still filled with mechanics and systems that can be quite intimidating for newcomers.

With Monster Hunter Wilds, the upcoming new title in the series, Capcom has tried to streamline a myriad of gameplay mechanics in favor of making it more newcomer-friendly. However, at its core, MH Wilds is still, well, a Monster Hunter game. And it’s filled with a myriad of mechanics and underlying systems that can get incredibly overwhelming for new players.

However, having a bit of context on the “Monster Hunter experience” can significantly help newcomers overcome the complexity of the game. Here are 5 basic things that you should keep in mind before jumping into Monster Hunter Wilds. Furthermore, these tips will also help you ease into the game without spending too much time in the menus.

5 Basic Tips and Tricks for Monster Hunter Wilds Beginners

1. Choose the Right Weapon

In Monster Hunter, choosing the right weapon is perhaps the most important aspect of the moment-to-moment gameplay. However, given you have 14 different weapon types to choose from, deciding on a single one can be a daunting task.

If you’re new to the series, it’s best to spend some time trying out all the weapons before settling on one that best suits your playstyle. To test the weapons, the best avenues are the Training Area and Low Rank quests. Additionally, you can check out different combos for your chosen weapon in the Hunter’s Guide. The Hunter’s Guide is accessed via the menu screen.

2. Don’t Spend Too Much Time Grinding Low Rank

Another thing to note is that, while you might be tempted to grind Low Rank missions, doing so isn’t necessarily recommended. Once you hit High Rank, your Low Rank gear will quickly become obsolete. While the Low Rank quests are a good avenue to test out weapons and builds, grinding them isn’t really worth it.

Instead, it’s best to go through Low Rank at a brisk pace, and once you hit High Rank, then you can start grinding for gear. One exception to this rule is if you’re grinding for rare resources like Mantles or Plates. For those resources, Low Rank is a good choice as it allows you to go through hunts quite fast.

3. Do Not Forget the Skills

In Monster Hunter, skills are basically the foundation of your build. Every piece of gear in Monster Hunter Wilds comes with its own set of pre-baked skills, even the weapons. Furthermore, you can upgrade and add new skills using Decorations.

When you’re breezing through quests in Low Rank, it’s quite easy to overlook skills. However, once you hit High Rank, you’ll find yourself getting overwhelmed by monsters’ HP and attack power. This is where skills come into play. Skills not only increase your raw stats but also increase the potency of your build. As such, it’s something you should always keep an eye on.

4. Endemic Life and Traps

Believe it or not, the Endemic Life you find while exploring the open-world map is more useful than it might look. For starters, Endemic Life like the Thunderbugs, Paratoads, Sleeptoads, etc. offer a direct advantage in combat.

Paratoads and Sleeptoads can be used to immobilize a monster for a brief moment. This then gives you plenty of time to dish out a full combo, and hence, a ton of free damage. And Endemic Life like the Thunderbug can be used to craft Shock Traps, which can be used to immobilize or capture a monster. As such, make sure to use the Endemic Life and Traps to your advantage.

5. Don’t Be Afraid of Carting

Lastly, don’t be afraid of “Carting” in Monster Hunter Wilds. The Monster Hunter games aren’t easy, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of if you get carted thrice by a Low Rank Chatacabra. However, don’t let getting Carting dissuade you from fighting the monster again.

Try a new weapon, or a different build, perhaps a new strategy, and you’ll definitely see better results. Carting in Monster Hunter games is a natural process of learning the “Monster Hunter experience.” And as long as you’re ready to learn from the mistakes that led you to get Carted, you’re on the right track to becoming a good hunter.
