What does Monster Hunter Wilds change from Monster Hunter World? Here are our top 5 picks of the major changes.

Monster Hunter Wilds builds on many systems that Capcom introduced in Monster Hunter World. Besides these improvements, the new game also makes a ton of changes that simply make it a far more interesting and exciting adventure. From a Seikret mount to the wound mechanic on monsters, here is a look at the five most important differences between MH World and MH Wilds.
5 Important Changes in Monster Hunter Wilds
Here are the five major changes that have the greatest impact on gameplay and how you approach every hunt:
- Introduction of Focus Mode to create wounds
- The ability to ride a Seikret
- Solo play support with NPC support hunters
- Primary and secondary weapon loadouts
- A highly fleshed-out weather system
Now, let’s take a look at each one of them to understand how these play a role in improving your overall gameplay experience.
1. Introduction of Focus Mode To Create Wounds

MH Wilds introduces an ingenious mechanic known as Focus Mode, through which you can focus your strikes on specific parts of a monster’s body. This is an important feature because you’ll create wounds on the bodies of beasts you are fighting as the battle continues. These wounds are weakened areas where you can land your strikes precisely with Focus Mode.
Repeatedly attacking wounds can cause those wounds to break and deal a large chunk of damage to the monster. To top it off, attacking wounds can sometimes cause body parts to sever off. This is yet another way to deal critical damage to the monster you’re hunting.
2. The Ability To Ride a Seikret

In Monster Hunter Wilds, your Seikret is a trusty companion that you can ride during or out of battle. When you’re in a difficult spot on a hunt, you can call on the creature to come and scoop you off. You can do this to simply avoid an incoming attack or to use potions or other items while you’re on the move. For many of the challenging boss battles, using your Seikret properly can even make the difference between success and failure.
Outside of fights, your Seikret is monumental in traversing the large world of MH Wilds. And, since you don’t need to control or steer it at all times, you can simply point your Seikret to your destination and engage in other activities while it takes you there. For instance, if you are heading in to battle, this would be the perfect time to harvest materials from the world and make necessary preparations. When you near the beast you want to fight, you can start your attacks while riding the Seikret too.

3. Solo Play Support With NPC Support Hunters

The Monster Hunter series has long encouraged players to join together to take down the more difficult monsters. However, MH Wilds takes this feature a bit further. Now, you may call on NPC support hunters to aid you in a challenging battle. This feature ensures that you can solo the entire game without needing to join hands with actual human hunters. You can call on these helpful NPCs by setting off an SOS flare, similar to how you’d signal other players.
And don’t think that the NPCs that come to your aid are useless. In fact, they might be equipped better than actual players who’d reach out after the SOS flare. So, the support hunters can help maximize your damage against a particular monster where you’re struggling alone.
4. Primary and Secondary Weapon Loadouts

MH World veterans would likely understand the pain of being restricted to only one weapon during the entirety of a hunt. Well, with Monster Hunter Wilds, this has become a thing of the past. Now, you can choose a primary and a secondary weapon before setting out to slay a monster.
You’ll start the hunt with the weapon you choose as your primary. However, you can jump on your Seikret at any time and grab your secondary weapon whenever needed. This has added a ton of flexibility to the gameplay, allowing players to approach hunts with different weapons and tactics.
If you’re not keen on equipping two separate weapons, you can arm your secondary slot with the elemental version of your primary. In this way, you have a way to deal both physical and elemental damage without needing to master different weapon classes.

5. A Highly Fleshed Out Weather System

The extensive weather system in Monster Hunter Wilds plays a major role in the game. Every biome goes through three distinct weathers, namely fallow, inclemency, and plenty. During the fallow weather, the biome in question will become arid and dry. During the inclemency period, the biomes experience excessive thunderstorms and rainfall. Finally, during plenty, the regions are lush with vegetation, and you’ll encounter the most interesting endemic life forms during this time.
Apart from setting the mood and aesthetics, each weather also determines what kinds of monsters you’ll run into. So, for specific monsters, you’ll need to set the weather to one particular phase. Also, if you’re collecting a specific resource, you may only find it during only one of the three weather phases. So, the weather system adds more depth to the game’s world, making it feel more alive and responsive.
