Nu Udra might not be the most challenging monster in Monster Hunter Wilds, but it certainly comes close. While it doesn’t have the sheer strength and aggression of Jin Dahaad, Gore Magala, or Arkveld, it’s still a monster that you should not take lightly, especially in High Rank. Being a Cephalopod-class monster, Nu Udra’s moveset is quite erratic, which can easily catch you off guard.

Furthermore, Nu Udra also has access to a plethora of area-of-effect attacks, which not only deal a ton of Fireblight damage but can also stagger you out of your own attack animation, leaving you vulnerable to the monster’s follow-up attacks and combos.

However, with the right weapon and skills (Decorations), you can easily overpower the Cephalopod, even in High Rank. Here’s a comprehensive guide on the best Great Sword build you can use to easily defeat Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds.

For the Great Sword build, we went with the full Jin Dahaad set alongside the Precipice Metallam. We also used the Chainblade Charm for the Flayer skill. The primary reason to choose Precipice Metallam is due to the good balance of raw and elemental damage it has to offer.

You can also make an Artian Weapon with Ice or Water elemental properties. However, during our testing, we found Precipice Metallam to be much more effective at both raw and elemental damage types compared to the Artian Weapon with similar properties. That said, if you have the resources to max out your Artian Great Sword, it might be able to surpass Precipice Metallam.

However, for Nu Udra, Precipice Metallam is more than capable. We even tested this build against Tempered Nu Udra, and it worked quite well against that variant as well. That said, the weapon and armor are only a fraction of what powers the build. The real “meat and potatoes” here are the skills. We essentially focus this build around maximizing damage, which goes really well against Nu Udra.

Most of the skills we chose are offensive, such as Ice Attack, Slugger, Agitator, Flayer, and Focus. Furthermore, we added a single point of Offensive Guard to bolster the Great Sword’s Guard/Power Clash.

In addition to that, we also added some defensive skills, such as Tremor Resistance and Fire Resistance. However, we did not use Divine Blessing or Defense Boost since we already get plenty of defense from the full Jin Dahaad set. If you want additional defense, you can use the Defense Charm. However, it shouldn’t be necessary as long as you make proper use of dodges and Guards.

Here’s a look at the components of the Great Sword build.

How To Use the Great Sword Build To Easily Defeat Nu Udra

Here are some tips to help you properly use the Great Sword build to easily defeat Nu Udra:

  • Since we’re focused on elemental damage using our Great Sword build, you will want to create and destroy as many wounds as possible. And there’s no better way to create wounds than a mounting attack. As soon as you reach Nu Udra’s lair, initiate a mounting attack (or you can do so as a follow-up to a sneak attack for additional damage).
  • Stay close to Nu Udra’s sides. That way, you will have plenty of room to dodge its flame attacks while also being able to dish out damage to its head. Do remember to make use of Perfect Guard against the monster’s lunge and slam attacks. Power Clash, paired with the Offensive Guard skill, helps you deal a ton of stagger damage.
  • As soon as you see Nu Udra getting enraged (the monster engulfs itself in a veil of flame), use the Rocksteady Mantle and attack its arms, preferably the two on the front. Dealing enough wound damage to the arms will sever them, making the battle much easier to manage.

Additional Tips

Using this build, we were able to consistently defeat Tempered Nu Udra in roughly 10 minutes. Additionally, this build also works really well against monsters like Ajarakan and Windward Plain’s Apex Predator, Rey Dau. If you’re having a hard time even with the build, you can always summon other players or Support Hunters for help. While the Support Hunters divert the monster’s attention, you can easily sneak in quite a few attacks.
