Everything you need to know about the High Rank and Low Rank quests in Monster Hunter Wilds, including how to unlock, differences, and more.

Monster Hunter Wilds is easily the most accessible game in the series. However, despite the game’s approach to making the “Monster Hunting” experience accessible to new players, there are still some mechanics that it doesn’t explain properly. The game’s Hunter Rank progression is one such mechanic that is bound to leave new players a tad bit confused.
Hunter Rank essentially serves as the game’s “player level” equivalent. However, instead of being tied to XP (or experience), the Hunter Rank is merely a reflection of how far you’ve progressed through the game’s Low Rank and High Rank quests. Much like past Monster Hunter games, MH Wilds’ progression is divided between Low and High Rank.
However, if you’re new to Monster Hunter, the distinction between LR and HR quests might not be immediately clear. To help with that, here’s a comprehensive guide on Low and High Rank quests in Monster Hunter Wilds.
What Is Low Rank in Monster Hunter Wilds?

The Low Rank quests are essentially what you get at the start of Monster Hunter Wilds’ campaign. These quests are meant as an introduction to the game’s systems as well as its world. Furthermore, Low Rank quests serve as a great place for new players to try out different weapons before settling on the one that fits their playstyle. Low Rank quests in MH Wilds encompass the first half of the main story as well. It covers essentially all the major regions of the game, and also the important NPCs. Once you complete all Low Rank quests, you’re given access to High Rank. Do note that in High Rank, the difficulty is ramped up significantly.
As such, it’s best to attempt those quests after you’re thoroughly familiar with MH Wilds’ basics. Furthermore, given your Low Rank armor will almost immediately become obsolete in High Rank, there’s no point in grinding LR.
What Is High Rank in Monster Hunter Wilds?

High Rank is currently the highest difficulty tier in Monster Hunter Wilds. The High Rank quests do feature the same monsters that you fought in Low Rank, but with significantly more Defense and Attack Power. Furthermore, High Rank is also the place where you will want to grind for new gear and upgrade material. Although HR is a significant step up in terms of difficulty compared to LR, it’s also the source of the best end-game gear.
In High Rank, you’ll get access to Tempered Monsters. The materials obtained from these monsters can be used to craft HR gear, which offers superior stats as well as better Decoration slots. In HR, you also get access to Artian Weapons.
The Artian Weapons are essentially custom armaments that can be crafted from parts obtained upon defeating Tempered Monsters. These weapons come in the highest base game rarity and can be customized based on your build’s affinity.
