The Guardian monsters are a special new breed of monsters making their debut in Monster Hunter Wilds. These monsters are based on pre-existing monsters and are artificially created to mimic them. The Guardian Rathalos is one such artificial monster, created by an ancient civilization and based on Rathalos.
If you thought Rathalos was tough enough on his own, you may need a little help dealing with the advanced Guardian Rothalos version. Rathalos was a Flying Wyvern, and the Guardian variant retains this trait. Their fighting styles and go-to attacks are more or less similar, too.
Apart from just mimicking Rathalos, the Guardian Rathalos brings its own flair and tricks to battle. These new tricks may catch you off guard, as Guardian Rathalos is one of the first few Guardian bosses you face in the game. If you’re struggling against this boss, we’re here to help. Guardian Rathalos Overview
As stated earlier, the Guardian Rathalos is an artificial monster, created by an unknown ancient civilization and designed to mimic Rathalos. This artificial Flying Wyvern has been imbued with Rathalos’ powers but is enhanced with Guardian traits.
Found as part of the Faithful Keepers mission in Chapter 3, the Guardian Rathalos is one of the hardest bosses in the game. Thankfully, as strong as the boss is, it is not without its fair share of weaknesses to exploit. Guardian Rathalos is weak to Dragon and Thunder-type elemental damage. The creature is also vulnerable to various status ailments.
How To Unlock Guardian Rathalos in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Guardian Rathalos in Monster Hunter Wilds is found as part of the main story in Chapter 3. As you progress through the events of Chapter 3, you will come across the Faithful Keepers mission. After your encounter with the Guardian Doshaguma, a small cutscene will play out, after which the Guardian Rathalos will come soaring in from the sky, and the boss fight will kick off.
Where To Find Guardian Rathalos
As stated above, you will find the Guardian Rathalos shortly after the Guardian Doshagguma in the Faith Keepers mission of Monster Hunter Wilds. This mission takes you to the Ruins of Wyveria partially and introduces you to the Guardian variants. After this mission, and after completing the story, you will have full access to the Ruins of Wyveria. You can then explore the area freely and hunt the Guardian Rathalos.

Guardian Rathalos Weaknesses
The Guardian Rathalos relies on more or less the same moveset as Rathalos but does so by deploying crystals in the aftermath of its attacks. These crystals are explosives and can be detonated easily with slingshots to deal damage. Furthermore, the Guardian Rathalos is weak to Dragon and Thunder-type elemental damage. If you’re looking to deal significant damage, you would be wise to aim at the legs or the mouth. These are relatively smaller targets, so you have to time and land your attacks with precision.
If targeting the monster’s head, either of Sever or Blunt or Shot damage will yield good results. If the creature moves around too much, pivot and focus on its legs with Sever or Shot damage. Stick to these two parts of its body, and you will slay the Guardian Rathalos in no time.

Guardian Rathalos Weak Points
As mentioned earlier, the Guardian Rathalos shares the same few weak spots as the Rathalos. The head and the legs are the parts to target. The head is vulnerable to all Sever, Shot and Blunt damage. The legs are better dealt with using Sever or Shot damage. Mix and match these attacks with Dragon or Thunder elemental damage, and you will slay the beast with ease.
Best Weapons for Guardian Rathalos in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Guardian Rathalos is an imposing figure that gives very few openings to exploit. We recommend bringing in a Greatsword or the Dual Blades depending on your playstyle. You can rush in quick for one heavy hit or use your traps to ground the creature and go for a furious combo. Make sure that you’re using Thunder or Dragon type weapons take advantage of the monster’s weaknesses.

How To Beat Guardian Rathalos in MH Wilds
The first major difference you’ll notice when taking on Guardian Rathalos is the crystal trail it leaves in the wake of its attacks. These crystals are explosive and detonate when shot with arc pods. The Guardian Rathalos will give you plenty of chances to exploit these crystals, so detonate them often to deal damage.
Apart from the crystals, you also need to be aware of a few attacks that the Guardian Rathalos uses. The first of these is the standard fireball spit. The Wyvern calls back on its natural tendencies and spits fire at you. The creature telegraphs this attack with fire in its mouth, so be prepared to dodge.
The Guardian Rathalos also has a flying variant of this same attack and is easily read with the fire in the mouth, too. Another attack sees the Wyvern take to the air and sweep the area with flames. If it does so, rush under its feet to take cover. Be careful, though, as you may piss it off, and it may repeatedly stomp the ground in anger.
Create too much distance, and the Guardian Rathalos will not hesitate to charge right at you on foot for a bite. Step out of the way and rush to exploit the opening. The monster may also close in distance by jumping and stomping right on you, followed by a fireball spit. Dodge as soon as you see the creature jump and aim its feet at you, and you’ll get a chance to exploit the opening.
If you stick to the Wyvern’s back for too long, it will sweep its tail to clear you out. The monster also has a variant of this sweep where it takes to the air before performing a wide sweep. Create distance quickly if you see the Guardian afloat.
Tips To Defeat Guardian Rathalos
- The Guardian Rathalos will give you very little breathing room, so make sure to exploit whatever openings you get. Each attack does have a short window to exploit right after. Furthermore, the crystals can always be shot for some quick explosion damage.
- Every now and then, the Guardian Rathalos will stand and start charging up, exuding a white aura. Do not let it do so, as this will enhance its attack damage and make the fight harder.
- Be wary of the flames as they will inflict Fireblight. If inflicted, repeatedly spam the dodge button to extinguish the effect. Alternatively, you can rely on Nulberries to get over the effect. Make sure to be appropriately stocked up on Nulberries before you head out to fight the Guardian Rathalos.
