Yian Kut-Ku is a monster making its return in Monster Hunter Wilds, and while it may be a familiar face, the boss remains a tough hurdle to cross. This strange Bird Wyvern is found in the High-Rank section of Monster Hunter Wilds, and its mix of timidness and aggression can throw even the most seasoned players off-guard. If you’re struggling against this creature, you’re probably not alone.

Thankfully, Yian Kut-Ku is not without its weaknesses. The boss is large, but not large enough, and trots at moderate speed, making its movements predictable. We shall discuss how to find Yian Kut-Ku, and how to beat this Bird Wyvern by exploiting its weakness in detail below. We shall also go over the various rewards and drops for beating Yian Kut-Ku.

Yian Kut-Ku Overview

Yian Kut-Ku is a Bird Wyvern that primarily resides in the Scarlet Forest and Cliffs regions of Monster Hunter Wilds. Timid yet not one to shy away from picking a fight if threatened, the Yian Kut-Ku deals fire-based elemental damage that can set you ablaze at melee range.

Despite its antics, the creature is fairly moderate in size and speed and deals relatively low damage. Its main source of dealing damage is its fireballs and tail sweeps, often followed by a charging dash. Its attacks are slow and easily read, making them easy to dodge when at a distance.

While you’re likely to engage in a 1v1 against this boss, you may also run into a pack of Yian Kut-Kus if you’re unlucky. In such cases, dung pods can be used to scare the pack away and begin your hunt.

You unlock Yian Kut-Ku by completing the main story and Chapter 3 of the game. Once the credits roll, continue ahead with Chapter 4-1 and speak to Alma. You then have to head to a vantage point overlooking the Scarlet Forest to find these dangerous Bird Wyverns.

Where To Find Yian Kut-Ku

As stated earlier, you will find the Yian Kut-Ku in the Scarlet Forest region of Monster Hunter Wilds. You explore this region at the behest of Alma and as part of the New Ecosystems quest in Chapter 4-1. You will have to complete the main story and go past the credits to reach Chapter 4. Once on this chapter and quest, follow through with the quest objectives, and you will inevitably run into the Yian Kut-Ku.

The Yian Kut-Ku is a Fire-type monster and deals primarily with fire-based elements. With so much emphasis on its fiery nature, it comes as no surprise that the Yian Kut-Ku is weak to Water. In addition to Water, the creature also falls to Ice and Thunder. We recommend sticking to Water-based attacks to deal with this creature swiftly.

Yian Kut-Ku Weak Points

The Bird Wyvern has several weak points for you to exploit during battle. Its head and mouth are its primary weak points that you can target from a distance to deal Shot damage.

Similarly, you can get up close and deal Blunt damage to the head, or Sever damage to the tail to take off large chunks of this creature’s HP. As long as you target anywhere except the legs, you’ll be dealing moderate to high damage and can win the fight.

Best Weapons for Yian Kut-Ku in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Yian Kut-Ku mostly spits out fireballs to inflict Fireblight and does tail sweeps to deal damage. The fireball (ranged attack) is easier to dodge compared to the tail sweep, so we recommend fighting this one from a distance. For this task, we suggest bringing in the Light Bowgun or Heavy Bowgun. Loaded with Water ammunition, these weapons will let you chip away at the Yian Kut-Ku’s weak points from a distance.

You can use any of the Water Weapons for the same purpose, but the task will be a little harder. If fighting at melee range, we recommend using the Dual Blades to deal quick bursts of damage and quickly escape. Since you’ll have small windows to attack, this weapon is your best bet to rush, attack, and escape.

Items To Carry for the Battle

  • Shock Trap
  • Pitfall Trap
  • Mega Potions
  • Nulberry
  • Energy Drink
  • Tranq Bomb (if you wish to capture the Yian Kut-Ku)

The Yian Kut-Ku often roam in packs, so you’ll have to begin the hunt by using Dung Pods to disperse the packs and isolate your target. Once the fight begins, the Yian Kut-Ku is a pretty standard boss that relies on the same few moves in random order to deal its damage.

The first attack you need to be wary of is its pecking attack. Get too close to its head, and the monster will start pecking away like a chicken to deal damage. Stay too close for too long, and it will stomp the ground 3-4 times. The monster also mixes in a tail sweep if you try to attack its tail during this sequence. Deal damage and quickly distance yourself before the stomps.

Once you’ve made some distance, the Yian Kut-Ku will either spit out a fireball or charge right at you while spitting fireballs. Both of these attacks require you to dodge, so be quick on your feet and evade the attacks.

If you fail to evade the charge, you will be knocked down and left vulnerable. When you evade the charge attack, the monster will stumble and fall over, giving you a large opening to attack its tail (one of its weak points).

Do not stay close to the Yian Kut-Ku for too long, as it will punish your proximity with different attacks. The creature can mix and match these attacks, making them hard to predict at such close proximity. Make sure to maintain your distance to prompt the charge attack and then evade the charge to create an opening. Alternatively, you can force an opening by using Sonic Pods to disorient the monster. Evade attacks and exploit openings to beat the creature.

Tips To Defeat Yian Kut-Ku

  • The Yian Kut-Ku roam in large packs, so you must use Dung Pods to disperse the pack before you begin your fight. Do not attempt to fight the large pack under any circumstances whatsoever. The permutations and combinations of attacks by a large pack will be impossible to handle.
  • The Yian Kut-Ku have large ears, much like the Dilophosaurus from Jurassic Park. These large ears are not just for show and are highly vulnerable to Sonic Pods. Use the Sonic Pods to hold the creature in place and exploit the opening to deal damage. You can also use these pods to cancel the monster’s charge attack.
  • The monster is weak to Water, so make sure to exploit its elemental weakness by using Water Weapons or Water ammunition.
  • If hit by the fire, you will be inflicted with Fireblight. Make sure to use the Nulberry to negate the ailment. Alternatively, spam the dodge roll button to extinguish the effect.
